- Van Dyke began working as a radio DJ at WDAN in Danville, Illinois, in the late 1940s.
- In 1947, he teamed up with mime Phil Erickson to form a comedy duo called Eric and Van – The Happy Mute.
- They toured the West Coast performing mime shows and lip-syncing to records, eventually moving to Atlanta, Georgia, to appear on a local television show called “The Merry Mutes.”
- He began working in television at WDSU-TV in New Orleans and later appeared on various network television shows.
- A friend at CBS recommended him and he signed a seven-year contract with the network. He hosted the CBS Morning Show, co-hosting with Walter Cronkite.
- Van Dyke made her Broadway debut in Girls Against Boys at the Alvin Theater in November 1959.
- Goodbye Birdie (1960–1963)
- Van Dyke played the title role of Albert Peterson in the musical from April 1960 to October 1961.
- The play received mixed reviews, but Van Dyke won the 1961 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical.
- He began his film career by reprising his role as Albert J. Peterson in the film version of “Bye Bye Birdie” (1963). Although different from the stage version, the film was a success and Van Dyke’s performance was critically acclaimed.

Notably, he is the older brother of actor Jerry Van Dyke, who played his on-screen brother on The Dick Van Dyke Show. Although his surname was the Dutch “Van Dyck,” his ancestry stretched into England, Ireland, and Scotland, tracing his roots back to Mayflower passenger John Alden.
