Escape from Tarkov gameplay

Escape from Tarkov is a tough and realistic shooter that combines multiplayer elements. It has three modes: PMC online raid, Scav raid and offline mode. In a raid, players can play alone or in a team, starting from different sides of the map. Their goal is to reach the extraction point on the opposite side, fighting others along the way. Players can find weapons, gear, and armor, and stash loot for later use or sell on the market.

There is very little information on the screen, and when players die during a raid, they lose everything. Insuring your gear can help with its recovery. Scav raids provide random gear, have a cooldown, and start mid-game. Raid can last from 15 to 45 minutes and can have up to 14 players.

Outside of raids, players can sell unwanted items, make trades, and complete merchant quests. Upgrading your Hideout provides bonuses such as reduced cooldowns, additional experience, and crafting abilities.

The gameplay is similar to military simulation games such as ARMA. Players customize weapons one by one, wear military equipment, and control movement and crouching. Inspecting ammunition requires manual inspection. The game has a health system for injuries that require specific medical supplies. Realistic ballistics and bullet behavior, including ricochet and penetration, are part of the game. Finding items takes time, and each item is displayed individually. Energy and hydration levels must be watched during raids.

Escape from Tarkov plot

Escape from Tarkov takes place in the fictional city of Tarkov within the Russian Special Economic Zone from 2015 to 2026. The city was shattered by political scandals and business failures. Warring factions control parts of the city, while aggressive locals (called “Scavs”) are in charge of certain areas.

Players have nine maps to explore, each representing a different part of the abandoned city. These maps include locations such as industrial parks, shopping malls, secret research facilities, military bases, and more. Additional maps are in development, including suburbs, terminals and towns. There are plans to combine open world options across all locations.

Players can join two PMC factions: USEC and BEAR. USEC focuses on Western firearms, while BEAR prefers Russian firearms. Each has its own merits. The main enemies are Scavs, divided into several types.

Regular Scavs have basic equipment, while Scav Raiders and Bosses are tougher, smarter, and have better equipment. Thieves and cultists are specific groups of Scavs with their own behaviors and equipment. The game developers occasionally change spawn rates and where these factions appear during special events.

Escape from Tarkov development

Development of Escape from Tarkov began in 2012. Lead developer Nikita Buyanov and her team gained experience working on a previous Absolutsoft game called Contract Wars. Both games are part of what the developers are calling the “Russia 2028” universe. Some team members also have real-world military experience, with one being a former Special Forces operator.

The developers made the game more realistic by recording real weapon sounds in an abandoned warehouse. Throughout the beta phase, they regularly updated the game, adding new content such as features, maps, characters, and gear. Major updates are sometimes accompanied by a “wipe,” which resets everyone’s progress in the game.

However, there are issues with cheaters and people exchanging in-game currency for real money, which is against the rules of the game. In 2020, the developers took action on this, warning players not to trade expensive items with others in the game. This has led to confusion among players, questioning what is allowed in fair item trading.
