Every Cameo In Ted 2 Explained

As is the case with most Seth MacFarlane projects, Ted 2 is stuffed full of pop culture references and celebrity cameos. The sequel to the 2012 smash hit comedy finds MacFarlane’s teddy bear fighting to be counted as a person in the eyes of the government. The film brings back Mark Wahlberg, Jessica Barth, Sam J. Jones, and Giovanni Ribisi from the first film, while also adding Amanda Seyfried and Morgan Freeman in notable roles. However, that only scratches the surface of Ted 2’s star-studded cast.

Many of the film’s cameos come from the world of comedy and have worked with MacFarlane before, but there is also a fair share of surprise appearances from dramatic actors and sports figures. Ted 2, like its predecessor, is a super irreverent comedy so many of these cameos get their humor just from the absurd nature of them, while others have a more natural connection to the plot. Some are also callbacks to the first film and its own array of cameos.

Liam Neeson

Grocery Store Customer

After playing the main antagonist in MacFarlane’s previous movie, A Million Ways to Die in the West, Academy Award nominee Liam Neeson made a brief appearance in Ted 2. Neeson plays a fittingly grizzled man who asks Ted if he is allowed to buy a box of Trix cereal since the cereal’s motto is “Trix is for kids.” After he asks Ted if “Trix is for children,” Ted tells him it will be okay, so Neeson places the cereal box inside his coat and makes his way out of the store.

While Ted 2 wasn’t the massive hit its predecessor was, the Seth MacFarlane sequel still has plenty of its own laugh-out-loud moments.

However, the punchline comes when he returns to the store in a post-credits scene with a bloody face and slams the box of Trix down before leaving. It is one of the film’s most absurd scenes as Neeson enters and exits the movie just to be intimidating about an extremely trivial purchase. The post-credits scene that shows a beaten-up Neeson returning the box of cereal to the store leaves plenty of big questions about how buying the kid’s cereal could have led to this shocking moment.

Patrick Warburton

Guy

Guy dressed as The Tick at Comic-Con in Ted 2

Patrick Warburton is no stranger to the world of Seth Macfarlane, as he voices Joe on Family Guy and had a fairly sizable role in the first Ted movie. His role in the sequel is greatly reduced, but he returns as the character of Guy to help with the rescue of Ted during the climax of the movie. Since the sequence takes place at the San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), Warburton’s Guy is in cosplay as the Tick, the comedic superhero he actually played in the 2001 TV adaptation.

His first appearance comes when Ted walks into Comic-Con and Guy notices him and asks what he is doing at the convention. He then calls over his boyfriend Rick (dressed like Worf) and explains they are there just to help pick on the “nerds” at the convention. This leads to many jokes as the two bully every “nerd” they pass until the punchline comes during the brawl later in the movie when four of the kids they bullied finally get revenge on them.

Michael Dorn

Rick

Alongside Patrick Warburton, Michael Dorn is in the Comic-Con sequence as Guy’s boyfriend Rick. Like Warburton, Dorn is dressed as his most iconic character, Worf from the Stark Trek franchise. The two actors have shockingly good chemistry with each other as they go around Comic-Con bullying those they deem as nerds, which is an ironic joke considering the two of them are icons in geek culture.

All 3 Ted Movies & Shows, Ranked

Seth MacFarlane has expanded the Ted franchise into TV with a ’90s-set prequel series – but how does the new show compare to the original movies?

Posts

MacFarlane is a massive fan of Star Trek, and this is a nice call back to Star Trek: The Next Generation and the career of Michael Dorn, although it is still strange to see him in the Klingon makeup but not doing the voice. He is also much smaller than most people might remember him as being during his appearance in Ted 2. As mentioned, the two get what is coming to them. After so many moments of bullying, the nerds strike back in a huge moment during the convention brawl.

Dennis Haysbert

Fertility Doctor

The doctor tells Tami-Lynn she's not fertile in Ted 2

Best known for his deep voice and work in commercials for Allstate, Dennis Haysbert is a respected character actor who has appeared in countless movies and TV shows. Some of his biggest roles are in movies like Major League (Pedro Cerrano), 24 (President David Palmer), and Lucifer (God). In Ted 2, Haysbert plays the doctor who tells Ted and Tami-Lynn that she is not fertile and is unable to have a baby, playing the scene rather straight.

Even when insulting Tami-Lynn’s medical history, Haysbert plays it with his trademark cool charm.

Even when insulting Tami-Lynn’s medical history, Haysbert plays it with his trademark cool charm. When he looks at Tami-Lynn with a straight face and says he “almost threw up and quit medicine” when he saw what her rampant drug use did to her ovarian canal, it was impossible not to laugh at such a ridiculous situation, despite Tami-Lynn breaking down about. When Ted tells her it will be okay, Haysbert says, “It isn’t,” and it is the perfect punchline for his cameo appearance.

5

Patrick Stewart

Narrator

Known for his legendary work on both the stage and screen, Sir Patrick Stewart is the narrator in both Ted films. Stewart brings a whimsy and dry humor to the narration that is perfect for the franchise. Like Michael Dorn, Stewart is an alumnus of Star Trek: The Next Generation but is also a regular voice on MacFarlane’s American Dad and has made several appearances on Family Guy.

The Ted Show’s Patrick Stewart Replacement Could Not Have Been More Perfect

Patrick Stewart helped contribute to the success of the Ted movies, and while he didn’t return for the TV show, his replacement was perfect.

Posts

Stewart is an incredible dramatic actor and has a recognizable Shakespearian voice, which makes him a funny addition to the Ted movies. Humorously, when Patrick Stewart didn’t reprise his role in the Ted TV prequel show, Ian McKellen took his place as the narrator. Of course, Stewart played Professor X in The X-Men franchise, while McKellen played their arch-enemy Magneto, making the actor change an in-joke of its own for the franchise.

4

Tom Brady

Himself

Tom Brady answers his door in Ted 2

In the first film, there is a brief joke about Ted and John’s love for quarterback Tom Brady. At the time, Brady was with the New England Patriots, so the Boston-centric movies loved incorporating him into the humor. He actually appears in the second movie as himself, as Ted and John scheme to steal a sperm sample from him so that he can be the biological father to Ted’s child. This plan obviously goes wrong, and Brady has to kick the duo out of his house.

It is a fittingly silly and gross moment in the movie (especially when they get the Pulp Fiction gold lighting as they look under Brady’s bed covers at his junk), as well as one of the most notable cameos. When Brady throws John over the railing and he crashes to the ground before throwing Ted at him with a “perfect spiral,” it was a great gag that mixed Brady’s football acumen with his good looks for a funny moment that went way over the line.

3

Jay Leno

Himself

Jay Leno comes out of the bathroom in Ted 2

Several late-night hosts make cameos in Ted 2, but Jay Leno’s is the most shocking of them all. When Ted is at his local bar, he comments on how Jay Leno comes into the place to have anonymous sex in the men’s bathroom. Mark Wahlberg’s John can be heard shouting from the bathroom for someone to get off him, only for Leno himself to step out and apologize for misreading the situation.

This was just a quick gag, which is why it is so shocking that they got Leno to sign on for just this one short joke that barely gets any screen time at all.

It is a crude and irreverent joke, making Leno’s involvement in the scene one of the film’s biggest surprises. It is also a very fast scene, with Leno only appearing for three seconds in the run-time as he comes out of the bathroom apologizing before heading off-screen and out the door. This was just a quick gag, which is why it is so shocking that they got Leno to sign on for just this one short joke that barely gets any screen time at all.

2

Jimmy Kimmel/Jimmy Fallon/Bill Maher

Themselves

Ted on Jimmy Kimmel Live

The other late-night talk show hosts in Ted 2 are a lot closer to what an audience would expect from their personas. During Ted’s trial to become a person, there is a montage of how the media is picking up and telling the story. In that montage, both Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon make jokes about Ted’s trial during their opening monologs. However, Fallon’s appearance is only in the unrated extended cut of the movie and not the regular theatrical version.

These Ted 2 cameos add to the film’s world, but they aren’t necessarily shocking or hilarious compared to the rest of the movie. Fallon’s joke said that if Ted could prove he was a real person and not just a bear, then Donald Trump’s hair planned to file a similar lawsuit. As for Kimmel’s joke, he said that Ted shouldn’t want to be a real person because cuddling with a child is cute for a stuffed animal but a felony for a person. Maher’s joke was at the expense of another Ted – Ted Kennedy.

1

Kate McKinnon, Bobby Moynihan, & Taran Killam

Themselves

SNL Ted 2

In that same montage, there is a brief clip of a Saturday Night Live sketch parodying the trial. In it, Bobby Moynihan wears a bear suit to play Ted, while Kate McKinnon and Taran Killam play Amanda Seyfried’s Samantha and John Slattery’s Shep Wild respectfully. SNL, like Jimmy Fallon, airs on NBC, which is owned by the same studio that released the Ted sequel, thus explaining how the movie could use all three SNL actors.

The gag was part of the opening monologue of a fake SNL episode where Ted is on the stand and cries out, “I am not an animal,” which pays homage to The Elephant Man. However, when Kate McKinnon’s attorney makes her argument, Ted jumps and humps her, and she jokes she is on “her period.” While their roles were brief, their inclusion further contributed to Ted 2’s stacked cast of high-profile comedians.
