Moana 2‘s demigods and gods are incredibly powerful, but some are clearly more powerful than others. In the world of Moana, there are several powerful gods capable of shifting and shaping the world to the way they see fit. Some, like Te Fiti, bring life to the ocean, while forces like Nalo sink islands to doom interlopers like humanity before they can pose a risk to them. Even beyond these deities, there are elemental spirits like the Ocean and impressive demigods like Maui.

Moana
The Demigod Wayfinder
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
The newest demigod in the world of Moana, the titular hero receives a magical upgrade at the conclusion of Moana 2. After becoming a Wayfinder and restoring the heart of Te Fiti in Moana, the young woman spends Moana 2 seeking to break the curse on the oceans that was put in place by Nalo untold years beforehand. Although Moana is ultimately successful in this mission, it comes at the cost of her life. After being struck by Nalo’s lightning, Maui finds Moana’s body. Luckily, the Ocean and Moana’s ancestors are able to restore Moana to life as a demigod.
A prospective Moana 3 could delve further into her powers, even potentially making her immortal in a similar way to Maui.
This act seems to not only empower Moana with the ability to shift the tides with her enchanted oar. She can also see the currents of the ocean, making her potentially the perfect Wayfinder. Because Moana’s power boost only comes towards the conclusion of the film, it’s hard to gauge what the full scope of her newfound abilities is. A prospective Moana 3 could delve further into her powers, even potentially making her immortal in a similar way to Maui. This could present an interesting story beat in Moana 3 where Moana is forced to confront what that means.

Matangi
A Mysterious But Powerful Wildcard
Similar to Moana’s powers remaining largely undefined, Moana 2‘s Matangi remains a powerful but mysterious wildcad. The unwilling servant of Nalo and guardian of the path to the legendary island of Motufetu, Matangi showcases several minor powers during the film. Matangi is capable of flight, allowing her to literally fly circles around Moana and Maui. This maneuverability comes with a visual motif reminiscent of a bat, which is reinforced by the swarm of bats she seems to care for (and can use as a weapon, as seen when she uses them to overwhelm and capture Maui).
Matangi is a term and name that appears across several different Oceaniac cultures, raising further questions about her true nature.
Matangi’s full origins aren’t revealed in the film, only that she unhappily serves under Nalo. Even her exact nature as a deity is somewhat ambiguous, as it’s possible she’s simply another magically enhanced human like Maui and Moana. She seems to share Maui’s immortality, suggesting that she’s been trapped within Nalo’s command for centuries, but it’s unclear if she has other powers and strengths that Maui possesses. Matangi’s abilities make her an impressive trickster whose centuries of experience gives her an edge over Moana, but remain unclear enough to cement her as the most powerful.

Maui
Demigod Of The Wind & Sea
Maui is the most iconic of the godly figures featured in the Moana films. Born a human but condemned to the sea by his parents over a thousand years before the events of Moana, Maui was rescued by the ocean and presented to the gods. Maui was granted a number of impressive powers by the gods, who transformed him into a demigod. Notably, most of these powers (such as his ability to shapeshift into animal forms) is directly tied to his magic fishhook. If it is lost or destroyed, he loses access to these specific abilities.
Even without his fishhook, Maui lives for a thousand years with no aging or mental degradation. This suggests that immortality is one of his inherent abilities. This is also the case with his immense strength, which allows him to easily lift boats and take blows from massive monsters like Tamatoa. However, while Maui might be the most overtly powerful demigod in the Moana films, he doesn’t stack up to real gods. Te Kā was able to handily defeat him and destroy his hook, while Nalo depowered him. This highlights the divide between demigods and gods in Moana‘s world.
3
The Ocean
Spirit Of The Seas
The Ocean is a living being in the Moana films, albeit one that works in mysterious ways. In theory, the Ocean is among the most powerful forces on the planet. The Ocean seems connected with the spirits and is capable of working in tandem with them to empower people like Moana and Maui with powers. The Ocean can interact with people when it wants, such as when it refused to allow Maui to abandon Moana’s mission to restore the heart of Te Fiti. The Ocean can even utilize tools, making it a potentially massive and unstoppable global force.

However, the Ocean also seems to be disconnected from any perceivable form of morality or humanity. While the Ocean has some implied desires (such as the return of Wayfinders so people will travel through it again), it doesn’t actively solve any conflicts on its own. While it may transport people like Moana to where they need to go, the Ocean remains on the sidelines of the major battles of the films. It’s also shown that gods like Nalo are capable of keeping the Ocean’s influence at bay, suggesting the spirits of the sea can’t quite match full divinity.
2
Nalo
The Vengeance Of The Storm
The overarching threat at the heart of Moana 2 (and the likely villain of a potential Moana 3), Nalo is a God of Storms within the world of Moana who seeks to bring about the end of humanity. Nalo believes that humans are a threat to his reign, which is why he sank the island of Motufetu eons ago. This act alone signifies the power jump that exists between gods like Nalo and demigods like Maui. Nalo is shown in the film in both a human-looking form and as a living storm.
Tofiga Fepulea’i plays Nalo in the post-credits scene of Moana 2.
Nalo is capable of throwing powerful lightning, conjuring massive twisters, and commanding monstrous sea life — all of which he tries to use to stop Moana and her crew from restoring Motufetu. He’s able to ward off the Ocean, preventing it from actively helping Moana until he’s defeated. He’s even capable of stripping demigods of their powers, although this is implied to at least require his focus instead of being merely a whim. There’s no clear weakness to Nalo, although the fact that his curse could be broken proves that he’s not omnipotent and unstoppable.

Te Fiti/Ta Kā
The Mother Island And Her Dark Side
Close
The most powerful of the deities seen in Moana, Te Fiti (and her dark side Te Kā) is easily the most impressive force yet introduced in the Moana films. Te Fiti is considered “the Mother Island,” from which all natural life sprang up across the seas. As opposed to a destructive god like Nalo, this suggests that Te Fiti is a more primordial force responsible for bringing life to the world. Her absence leads to a global decay that spreads across the ocean, killing natural life and unleashing monsters into the ocean, hinting at her fundamental importance.
When transformed into the fiery Te Kā, Te Fiti becomes the most dangerous force yet introduced in a Moana film. Te Kā is a chaotic force of nature, capable of simply repairing any damage done to her body and generally being powerful enough to brush off blows from Maui with little effect. Both sides of Te Fiti are incredibly impressive, but her foundational role in the continued existence of the planet suggests she is a more powerful and important figure within the pantheon of gods that have been introduced in Moana and Moana 2.
