Front 242
Front 242 is a band from Belgium, known for electronic music. They rose to fame in the 1980s. They created a unique style called electronic body music, which had a huge influence on electronic music and industrial music.
The band was formed in 1981 in Aarschot, Belgium. It was founded by Daniel Bressanutti and Dirk Bergen. They wanted to use new electronic tools to create music and art. Before forming Front 242, Bressanutti was involved in a music project called Prothese. The band’s name comes from the idea of a popular uprising. The number “242” may have a special meaning related to peace.
Initially, Bressanutti, Cordenis and De Meyer were the band’s lead singers. But later, Jean-Luc De Meyer became the lead singer. They wanted to remain anonymous, so they wore sunglasses and uniforms during performances. Bressanutti even controlled the sound from behind the audience.
Front 242 released their first album, Geography, in 1982. They signed with a record label called Les Disques du Crépuscule. Their song “U-Men” and its music video brought them to attention. Richard Jonckheere joined the band in 1983, helping with percussion and vocals.
Over time, Front 242’s music has continued to evolve. They’ve experimented with different sounds and influences. Even though members have come and gone, the band has always stayed true to their own unique style. They’ve had a huge impact on the music scene, inspiring many other artists in the electronic and industrial genres.

Top 242 Music Style
Front 242’s music is influenced by a variety of styles and artists. Daniel Bressanutti’s music is inspired by musique concrète, the avant-garde, and the experimental music of Karlheinz Stockhausen. Jean-Luc De Meyer admired Joy Division’s dramatic content, while Fad Gadget’s electro-pop style also left its mark on their music. Although they admire musicians such as Klaus Schulze, Kraftwerk, and Telex, Front 242 does not consider their styles to be direct influences on them.
Although Front 242 strives to remain genre neutral, they adopted the term “electronic body music” (EBM) to describe their style of music. Kraftwerk used the term on their 1978 album, and Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (DAF) also used the term in the early 1980s. However, Front 242 claimed EBM as their own style, explicitly linking it to EBM on their 1984 album No Comment, and solidified their association with the genre by including EBM on the influential 1988 compilation This Is Electronic Body Music.
Front 242’s decision to adopt EBM as a description of their music demonstrates the key role they played in shaping and defining the genre. By embracing the term, they expanded it from a simple phrase to a recognized musical category. Their influence on the development of EBM is further highlighted by their leading presence on important compilations and their clear association with the genre in their album releases.
Front 242 seeks to carve their own path throughout their musical journey, striving to be unique and unaffected by trends. They want their music to stand out on its own and not be pigeonholed into a specific genre or compared to other industrial bands. This approach highlights their commitment to artistic integrity and their desire to create authentic, unique music.
