How to Fix The First Descendant Controller Issues on PC

NEXON’s latest looter shooter, The First Descendant, is finally out on PC and consoles. The Unreal Engine 5 game is available on PC via Steam and runs mostly well. Some technical issues are expected at launch, and we hope NEXON continues to monitor these issues. If you’re experiencing controller issues while playing The First Descendant on PC, here’s how to fix them.

Fix first descendant controller issue

In order to ensure your controller works properly in The First Descendant, you will need to make sure Steam Input is disabled in the game.

  • Make sure The First Descendant is not running
  • Open Steam, and navigate to your library
  • Here, right-click on “First Descendant” and select “Properties”

  • In the Controller tab, select Disable Steam Input (or Use Default Settings) under Override The First Descendant

Disable Steam Input

This will ensure that the built-in native profile set by the developer is used instead of Steam Input. Both types of controllers will still work if you use Steam Input, but you will not see the correct button prompts in the case of a PlayStation controller.

We’ve tested it with an Xbox Series Controller as well as a DualShock 4, and both work fine with the correct button prompts.

Use a wired connection to connect a PlayStation controller

To avoid any connection issues, it is recommended that you use a wired connection when using a PlayStation controller such as the DualShock 4 or DualSense.

Check detected controllers

If you still can’t get your controller to work, make sure Steam is detecting the controller you plugged in. To check for detected controllers in the Steam client, simply select Steam > Settings > Controllers:

You can’t change button prompts for a specific controller, but in our testing, even if you had multiple controllers plugged in, the game would switch to the correct prompts if you started using a different controller.

The First Descendant suffered from some technical issues at launch, notably DirectX 12 errors. For more on The First Descendant, be sure to check out our dedicated section.
