Fortnite Development
Fortnite was launched around 2011, born out of an internal game development contest at Epic Games, and is a fusion of the building and shooting game genres. Faced with development challenges and transformation, it partnered with Tencent to move to a games-as-a-service model. Fortnite Save the World was initially planned to be free-to-play, released as a paid early access game in 2017, and eventually transitioned to a paid game in 2020.

Following the rise of battle royale games like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Epic quickly developed Fortnite: Battle Royale and released it as a free-to-play game with microtransactions. The game became a hit and expanded to platforms like iOS, Android, and Nintendo Switch. This made its development very different from Save the World.
Fortnite Creative was launched in 2018, providing players with a sandbox mode to build on a private island. Initially tied to the battle pass, it was later made free to all players. In 2023, Unreal Editor for Fortnite was launched, allowing players to use the Unreal Editor with Fortnite assets.
In 2023, Fortnite Experiences launched, redesigning the client to showcase a variety of modes and creative experiences. Epic launched three new free-to-play modes: Lego Fortnite, a partnership with the Lego Group; Rocket Racing, an arcade-style racing game from Psyonix; and Fortnite Festival, a rhythm game developed by Harmonix. These modes are combined with the game’s battle pass system to offer unique rewards.
