In story mode, when you are on the upgrade screen in the main colony, you will see different ants that can be unlocked. These unlocks cost hundreds of Royal Jelly, but they increase the strength and efficiency of the colony. At the beginning of story mode, you cannot upgrade or unlock anything yet.
You have to go through the 1.1 or 1.2 story mode to get some Royal Jelly, Food and Territory to improve your main colony. After completing stages 1.1 and 1.2, you can get 40-60 Royal Jelly from these two stages. If you change the difficulty, you can get more Royal Jelly. You can also repeat these stages if you don’t have enough Royal Jelly to upgrade your main colony yet.

However, the best way to get Royal Jelly is to complete the level first, then unlock the Challenge Mode for the level. The Royal Jelly reward increases from +33 (medium difficulty) Royal Jelly in the first few levels to +78 Royal Jelly. You can also play on a higher difficulty instead of Challenge Mode, but this will give less Royal Jelly and is much more difficult. In short, it’s not efficient enough.
If you have trouble completing Challenge Mode, you can turn it off and try an easier difficulty until you can get more upgrades for your colony. You can also practice in free custom games to get the hang of it.
