What is a hole in the heart?
A “hole in the heart” refers to a congenital heart defect characterized by an abnormal opening in the wall (septum) between the heart chambers.
The condition is usually present at birth and can take various forms, such as atrial septal defect (ASD) and ventricular septal defect (VSD). While most holes are congenital, they can also develop after birth due to factors such as a heart attack or medical procedures.

Symptoms of a heart defect can vary depending on the size and location of the defect. Many babies with a small ASD or VSD may not have any symptoms, while larger defects may cause complications. Common symptoms include:
- fatigue
- Difficulty breathing during physical activity
- Swelling in the legs, feet, or abdomen
- Palpitations
- In severe cases, a stroke or heart murmur may occur.
reason
The exact cause of a hole in the heart is often unclear, but genetics may play a role. Factors such as maternal smoking during pregnancy, certain genetic diseases, and environmental influences may also contribute to the formation of these defects. In some cases, congenital heart defects are caused by developmental errors during fetal growth.
cure
Treatment for a hole in the heart depends on the size of the hole and the associated symptoms. Many small holes may heal on their own, while larger holes often require surgical intervention to prevent complications such as heart failure or pulmonary hypertension.
