Is Derry Girls based on a true story?
Derry Girls is not a strict retelling of true events, but was influenced by the personal experiences of its creator, Lisa McGee. While not a documentary, the series is inspired by McGee’s own teenage years during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The show captures the essence of her adolescence, based on real-life events and characters.
McGee attended an all-girls Catholic school, and similar to the characters in the show, humorous incidents, such as skipping class to attend a concert and writing letters to Chelsea Clinton, were reflections of her own past. At its core, Derry Girls blends elements of reality with fictional storytelling to create a comedic and nostalgic portrait of a tumultuous period in Northern Ireland’s history through the lens of personal experience.
