The origins of the film can be traced back to an original concept called a “rock documentary,” centered around the Penguin rock band, reminiscent of The Beatles. Eric Darnell has completed filming on Ant-Man (1998) and is preparing to direct. While the idea was ultimately shelved in 2001, the Penguins were revived in Madagascar in a new form – the Commandos.
The film features a selection of songs from various artists and features an original score by Hans Zimmer. Sacha Baron Cohen’s iconic cover of “I Like to Move It” has become an enduring theme throughout the series. Upon its release on May 27, 2005, Madagascar received mixed reviews.
While praised for its visual appeal and inherent charm, some critics pointed out flaws in the story and humor. Despite this, the film’s financial performance remained strong, grossing $556.6 million against a production budget of $75 million, ensuring its status as the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2005.
Madagascar’s victory sparked a multimedia phenomenon. These include two sequels, spin-off Penguins of Madagascar (2014), numerous short films, TV series, specials, video games, theme park attractions and live stage shows. The cinematic journey continued with Madagascar: Escape from Africa 2 (2008), cementing its place in entertainment history.

At the bustling Central Park Zoo in the heart of New York City, Alex the lion enjoys celebrity status as the “King of New York.” In the company of his comrades – Melman the giraffe, Gloria the hippo and Marty the zebra, Alex’s life is full of attractions.
However, Marty is tired of the same life and longs for the excitement of the wild. On his tenth birthday, despite his friends’ efforts to keep his spirits up, Marty learns that the zoo’s penguins are plotting to head to Antarctica, igniting his desire for freedom. Alex, Melman and Gloria follow the Penguin, chasing Marty, leading to chaos at Grand Central Station, where they are tranquilized by the authorities.
Under pressure from activists, the zoo decided to send the escapees by boat to a Kenyan game reserve. During the trip, the penguins commandeer the ship, inadvertently causing the crates containing Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria to fall into the ocean.
They washed ashore in Madagascar and encountered a colony of lemurs under the rule of King Julian XIII. When predatory creatures called “nests” threaten the lemurs, Alex’s appearance scares them away. Alex initially blames Marty for their predicament and works to send out a distress signal, while Marty seeks solace in the wild. As the team adjusts, Alex’s carnivorous nature surfaces, leading him to chase Marty. Feeling regret and remorse, Alex isolates himself among predators.
Meanwhile, the penguins’ pursuit of Antarctica leads them back to Madagascar. Marty ventures into predator territory to convince Alex to return, but Alex fears his predatory instincts will resurface.
When Nest threatens Marty, Alex resists his urges and protects his friend. Alex’s respect for the lemurs is rekindled and his relationships with his friends are restored. Although the penguins hid the news that the ship was running out of fuel, leaving the group in trouble, the lemurs celebrated their bond with a joyous farewell.
In this unexpected adventure story, friends explore newfound territory, rediscover their identities, and form an unbreakable bond that teaches them valuable lessons about the true nature of freedom and the value of friendship.
