The film is based on the story of Robin Ramirez, Amico Fontaine and Marilyn Johnson, who were arrested by Phoenix police in 2012. The film describes that the police found more than $25 million worth of fake coupons in Ramirez’s home and seized assets worth more than $2 million.

Is Queenpins based on a true story?

Yes, Queenpins is based on the true story of a coupon scam where three Arizona women made millions selling fake coupons.

In the scam, the coupons were forged and duplicated. While there are some changes in the movie, such as the names and motivations of the characters, the true story highlights the severe consequences these women faced, including prison terms and damages.

In an interview, Pulapilly said she and co-director Gaudet would “dig deep into the internet to try to find interesting, unique, and never-before-told stories.” Eventually, they found their answer on a coupon blog that told a story about a scam.

“We called the detective in Phoenix and talked to him and he talked about how this was a legitimate case and the impact this scam was having on our economy,” she said. “We quickly drove to Phoenix and spent time with him and learned about the actual case and what was going on and the mechanics of what they were doing and what they did after they made so much money selling fake coupons.”
