Notably, Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt have also joined the show, adding comedic flair to this supernatural story. Set in New York City several years after the events of Somerville, Oklahoma, the show’s exciting blend of humor, nostalgia, and supernatural thrills sees veteran Ghostbusters team up with new members to take on powerful, chilling opponents.
Sony Pictures announced the sequel in April 2022, with Jason Reitman initially set to direct. However, in December of the same year, Gil Kenan took over as director. The film was released to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the release of Ghostbusters (1984), paying tribute to the series’ late director Ivan Reitman, who played a key role in the early films.
With principal photography set to take place from March to June 2023, Ghostbusters: Ice Empire marks a major chapter in the Ghostbusters saga, building on the legacy with a cast of beloved and new characters, ensuring fans will experience another wild ghost-hunting adventure.

No, Rick Moranis is not in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Taking center stage are the returns of Peter Winkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), each of whom reprise their iconic roles in a more prominent capacity. Notably, Annie Potts will be actively involved in the ghost-hunting this time around, adding a new dimension to her character, Jenny.
The addition of the mischievous green ghost slime adds a nostalgic touch to the sequel, which promises to blend humor with supernatural chaos. However, fans will notice that original cast members Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis are not in the cast, and at least based on current information, the latter will not be returning.
While the original film’s Ghostbusters trio has expanded, Rick Moranis’ absence is noticeable in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Unlike some of his co-stars, Moranis will not be returning for the film. As details about the storyline and character dynamics emerge, it seems that the film has chosen to focus on certain original cast members while leaving others, including Moranis, out of the supernatural element.
The decision to exclude Moranis could be influenced by a variety of factors, but it has fans wondering how the storyline of Ice Empire will develop without the familiar ghost-hunting character of Louis Tully.
