“Sparkle” is set in Detroit in 1968 and focuses on the three Anderson sisters: Sparkle, Dee and Sister. Record executive Sticks discovered their talent and convinced them to form a singing group, despite their mother Emma’s disapproval of music outside the church. As the sisters grew in popularity, the older sister’s relationship with comedian Satin became abusive, leading to a drug addiction. Despite efforts to help her, tragedy struck and Satine died accidentally during the conflict.
The sister takes responsibility for Satin’s death and faces legal consequences. Meanwhile, Dee continues medical school and Sparky faces challenges in pursuing her singing dream against Emma’s wishes. A reconciliation is reached between Emma and Dee, and Dee heads off to medical school. Sparkle rejected Stickles’ proposal to pursue a solo career. In a poignant musical performance, she dedicated a song to her sister. Emma appears aloof at first, but she surprises Spark with her support, and the film ends with Spark’s success and a sense of family healing.
