Jake Johnson’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

Jake Johnson

actually got his start in the industry as a playwright and his best movies and TV shows help to reflect his gift for storytelling. Johnson has earned a reputation for playing characters with self-deprecating humor and sarcastic natures, like New Girl‘s Nick Miller, and while that may be true, not all of his projects are strictly comedic. Johnson has been able to show versatility in comedy and drama throughout his career.

In addition to writing and acting, Johnson worked in the industry as a production assistant when first starting out. More recently, he has also become a producer and made his feature directorial debut in 2023 with the movie Self Reliance. With his interest in so many facets of storytelling in the world of movies and TV, it’s clear that Johnson will have many more characters to bring to life yet. His turns in these movies and TV shows are, however, his best so far.

Jake Johnson is not known for appearing in huge blockbusters. He’s much more known for appearing in indie films. He and director Colin Treverrow, however, did have an existing relationship as they had worked on indie projects together, and they reunited for an epic return for the Jurassic Park franchise.

Jurassic World jumpstarted the new chapter of the franchise by returning the audience to the very island where Jurassic Park was originally supposed to open. There, a successful theme park featuring all-new dinosaurs has been successfully operating. Of course, during the events of the film, disaster occurs as the dinosaurs run the island and humans begin to run for their lives.

It took nearly 15 years for Jurassic World to arrive after 2001’s Jurassic Park 3, as cracking the sequel’s story proved a tricky task.

Johnson appears as a Jurassic World employee who works in the park’s control room. He has plenty of his usual sarcasm and dry humor in the role as he mostly observes the disaster befalling the rest of the island. It’s a great role for him to almost be the voice of the audience commenting on what he sees via security feeds.

Johnson has also lent his voice to video games featuring the character.

Drinking Buddies marks the first movie Johnson did with director Joe Swanberg. The two have gone on to collaborate on indie projects multiple times since, and Drinking Buddies helps audiences see the foundation of their artistic relationship.

Drinking Buddies follows a pair of employees at a craft brewery (Johnson and Olivia Wilde) whose close working relationship causes friction in their romantic relationships with other people. It’s a love square of sorts as the movie examines the difficulty of male-female friendships in a very different way from movies like When Harry Met Sally.

Like the other projects Swanberg and Johnson would go on to do together, Drinking Buddies had an outline for a story, but it did not have a fully-formed script. Instead, the actors improvised the dialogue for different situations, creating the movie’s storyline. This really allowed the conversations in the movie to feel more natural. It also allowed Johnson, who was already known for his comedic work, to get in moments of drama.

When The Lego Movie was first announced, there were plenty of skeptics who believed it would just be a cash-grab for a toy company. The movie, however, has a ton of heart – and also a ton of famous talent voicing its characters.

The movie follows a Lego bricklayer (Chris Pratt) as he leads a revolt among the Lego people against a businessman who wants to create his own version of a perfect Lego world, not allowing for other Lego people to express themselves. The movie featured for the appearances of characters from different franchises and has created a whole world of Lego movies.

Johnson has a brief role in the movie, but with such a stacked cast, most of the actors who lent their voices to the movie have brief roles. He voices one of the construction workers who works with the regular guy who becomes a revolutionary. While Johnson’s role might not be as impressive as some of his others, it’s a sure sign that his line delivery is appreciated by the movie’s team who filled the voice cast with comedic talent like Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Keegan Michael-Key, and more.

The Lego Movie was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.

Remakes, reboots, sequels, and prequels of a beloved property can be difficult to pull off in a way that brings in new fans and makes the originals happy. 21 Jump Street beat the odds and still has fans hoping for movies set in the same world.

The buddy cop movie sees Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum play a pair of undercover officers who go back to high school. While they are obviously too old to pull that off in real life, the movie makes the ridiculousness of the premise work for the story. The movie embraced teen movie tropes as well as made fun of them, striking the perfect balance of homage and satire.

Johnson appears in the movie as the high school principal. He is weary, burnt out by his work in the education system, and Johnson wears his years in the school system well. Johnson’s knack for comedic timing served him well here.

Win It All marks another team-up between director/writer Swanberg and actor/writer Johnson. This time, however, it’s not a comedy about relationships, but instead, a crime comedy about people taking things a step too far.

The movie sees Johnson as gambling addict Eddie Garrett. He struggles so much with his addiction that when he is tasked with holding onto a large sum of money for someone he knows who is going to prison, he cannot help but use the cash to feed his own need for gratification.

Johnson’s Eddie is a man knowingly heading to his own destruction because he just cannot stop gambling. While Johnson and Swanberg did co-write a script for the movie, their more laidback approaches to storytelling on camera are still evident here, which is either a sign of very natural writing together or more improvisation from Johnson.

Though Johnson has focused more on film since the end of his time on New Girl, he did return to television for the short-lived Minx. It only ran for two seasons before being canceled.

The series was set in the 1970s in the world of adult entertainment. It follows a woman in Los Angeles who teams up with an adult entertainment publisher to create the first erotic magazine aimed at women instead of men. Much of the series focuses on the relationships that form among those who work on the project, and the show does a great job at making feminist statements and still feeling like fun, and even sometimes soapy, TV.

Minx was nominated for two Satellite Awards during its run.

Though Johnson was initially brought on to the show as a guest star as Doug, he was bumped up to a series regular fairly quickly thanks to his chemistry with show lead Ophelia Lovibond. It’s their chemistry that makes some of the more ridiculous storylines work and makes a lot of fans lament the loss of the show.

There’s something that is very “everyman” about Johnson’s voicing of this version of Peter…

Multiversal stories have become incredibly popular as of late. It’s not just studios finding a trend and refusing to let it go. It’s also the kind of story that allows writers and actors to get to play with multiple versions of the same character. In Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, the sequel to Into The Spider-Verse, Johnson returns to voice one of the many versions of Spider-Man.

The story sees Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) on a journey through a multiversal hub where he meets many different Spider-heroes who are intent on protecting him or coming after him. The movie makes for one of the most expansive pockets of Spider-Man lore to make it onto the screen as so many Spider-characters from the comics appear, even just in cameo roles, as well as characters from animated series and live-action movies.

Johnson’s Peter B. Parker is a bit more weathered of a Spider-Man. He is aging, married, has a daughter, and still gets out to help Miles and save the day. There’s something that is very “everyman” about Johnson’s voicing of this version of Peter, which is why so many fans have been curious to see him take on the role in live-action as well.

Across The Spider-Verse was nominated for three Golden Globes.

…another showcase for Johnson’s natural approach to his roles.

Safety Not Guaranteed marks one of Johnson’s earlier projects with director Colin Treverrow. The movie has a surprising start as it was actually inspired by a real story. It was inspired by a classified ad in Backwoods Home Magazine in 1997, placed by a man who was looking for a time travel buddy (via Sundance). That makes the science fiction premise of the movie all the more interesting, and the movie has a very grounded approach to its story.

Mark Duplass plays the person who placed the classified ad, while Johnson and Aubrey Plaza play two magazine employees tasked with investigating him and his claims in the ad. While the story has fun sci-fi elements, those are not what make it work. It’s the hearts of the characters at the center of the story, and the near-universal desire to change something from one’s past, that do.

Much like his voice work as Peter B. Parker, there’s an everyman quality to Johnson’s Jeff here. The character feels like someone an audience member could meet on the street and strike up a conversation with, and it’s just another showcase for Johnson’s natural approach to his roles.

Jake Johnson, whether he wants to be or not, is likely forever going to be known as the person who brought Nick Miller to life. New Girl had a small and loyal fanbase when it aired on television, but it has found new life in the years since its cancelation thanks to streaming services, allowing audiences to binge-watch the show over and over again.

The series kicks off with Zooey Deschanel as the titular New Girl, a teacher who moves into a new apartment with three male roommates after her boyfriend cheats on her and she needs to move out of the house they share. The series acts as a coming-of-age for all of its main characters, but perhaps the most for Nick Miller, who is essentially the stereotypical man-child of sitcoms early in the show, only to become an accomplished writer and husband by the end of the show’s run.

New Girl is laugh-out-loud funny, and Nick Miller gets some of the best jokes in the show. Johnson, like most of the cast of the series, proved himself adept at delivering one-liners, improvising, and even engaging in physical comedy. While much of the show’s success is down to the chemistry of the main cast, there is no doubt that everyone involved is immensely talented and funny.

…the first time an audience gets to see a Spider-Man like Johnson’s…

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was released at a time when, despite his many forays into indie movies, the vast majority of movie and TV fans only knew Johnson as New Girl’s Nick Miller. The movie made people sit up and take notice that there was more to Johnson than playing the sitcom goofball as Into The Spider-Verse became a massive hit and paved the way for the sequel to do the same.

The movie serves as the audience introduction to Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a teenager who has very similar powers to the Peter Parker version of Spider-Man who most audiences have seen on the big screen multiple times. Miles starts to become his universe’s Spider-Man after its version of Peter Parker is killed. Johnson’s Peter B. Parker becomes his mentor in the multiversal story.

This is also the first time an audience gets to see a Spider-Man like Johnson’s. He’s disheveled and a little jaded because he’s 38 and has been fighting crime for as long as Miles has been alive. His character draws from a lot of other Peter Parkers that have appeared in movies and television, but that does not matter because he feels like a character made just for Johnson’s self-deprecating style of humor and dry wit.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse won the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Satellite Award for Best Animated Feature. It also made over $394 million at the box office.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is Johnson’s most critically lauded, awarded, and commercially successful movie.
