Though he found stardom after years as a character actor, Jeremy Renner’s best movies and TV shows showcase the spectacular career he has built. Born in California in 1971, Renner’s professional acting career began in the 1990s with his debut coming in the teen comedy National Lampoon’s Senior Trip. His breakout role came playing real-life serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in Dahmer, which earned him a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Male.

Renner wouldn’t really break out big in Hollywood until his starring role in the Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker. The surprise success of that film put him on the map for many big movies that followed, including joining the Mission: Impossible franchise as well as playing Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, in the MCU. Renner’s 2023 snowplow accident nearly claimed the actor’s life, but his astonishing recovery and return to acting helped make him an inspiring figure for many fans and added to his legacy that continues to grow.

Though not inside the Yellowstone universe of shows, Taylor Sheridan delivered another hit series with Mayor of Kingstown. Jeremy Renner leads the series as Mike McLusky, the son who has taken control of his powerful family in a town in Michigan. With the local prison as the main source of business, the McLusky has kept the fragile peace in the community through the various street gangs, police, and other powerful players.
Renner delivers an intense and riveting performance as this complicated protagonist, a man who has wanted to escape his hometown his entire life but now finds himself consumed with the responsibility to keep it from being torn apart. The series tackles complex themes and shades of grey while also delivering a riveting crime thriller along with plenty of family drama. While not as popular as Sheridan’s other series, Mayor of Kingstown remains a must-watch show.

Jeremy Renner worked alongside some big-name stars in this Western masterpiece. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford tells the true story of famed outlaw Jesse James (Brad Pitt) and Robert Ford (Casey Affleck), a member of his outlaw crew who was enamored with the man only to eventually be the one to take his life by shooting him in the back. Renner plays Wood Hite, a real-life outlaw and cousin to James, who plays a role in the eventual falling out.
Rather than being action-packed like fans might expect, the movie is a somber and sad Western movie with an engrossing melancholy feel. Pitt is note-perfect as the dark criminal, with the movie showing that James was a cold-blooded killer and not the folk hero some stories make him out to be. Affleck earned an Oscar nomination for his complex performance as the conflicted young man introduced into this ugly world he grew up idolizing.

Jeremy Renner was part of an all-star cast in this Best Picture nominee from David O. Russell. American Hustle is loosely based on the FBI Abscam operation in the 1970s, an undercover investigation to uncover political corruption. Christian Bale stars in the movie as Irving Rosenfeld, a con artist working alongside his lover and partner, Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), on various scams only to be caught by an FBI agent (Bradley Cooper) and forced to work alongside law enforcement to carry out this elaborate ruse.

A decade after being introduced into the MCU in Thor, Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton finally got the chance to headline his own story in the Disney+ series Hawkeye. Embracing a holiday flare for the series, Hawkeye finds Barton on a getaway to New York City just before Christmas, only to be pulled into a criminal plot when a young aspiring hero named Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) attempts to take over the mantel of the heroic archer.
The series wisely takes inspiration from Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye comic run, giving the show a comedy edge while also depicting Barton as more of an everyman hero rather than someone who truly belongs in the Avengers. Renner seems to be having more fun with the role while Steinfeld steals the show as the lively new hero. Hawkeye has a lot of fun introducing new characters like Kate Bishop and Echo while also bringing in some surprise returning characters.

Before officially becoming one of the Avengers, Jeremy Renner joined the team of another hugely popular franchise. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is the fourth movie in the series and finds Tom Cruise returning as superspy Ethan Hunt. Following a botched mission at the Kremlin, Hunt is labeled an international terrorist and must go on the run with his team and an agency analyst, William Brandt (Renner). With no support and few gadgets, the heroes have to prevent nuclear war.
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol feels like a shift in the franchise. With the iconic Burj Khalifa stunt, Cruise proved that there was little he would not do to entertain and thrill fans. It makes for a hugely entertaining spy movie while also having a lot of fun putting the IMF agents as underdogs with their malfunctioning equipment being particularly funny. Renner fits into the team easily and returns as Brandt in the fifth movie.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Arrival is a beautiful and powerful sci-fi movie that showcased the filmmaker’s talents in the genre long before the Dune movies. Amy Adams stars in Arrival as Louise Banks, a linguist who is recruited by the military to help establish communication with an alien species that has just arrived on Earth. Renner plays physicist Ian Donnelly, who partners with Louise on the mission to study the alien craft and understand more about these visitors.
Without big special effects battles, Arrival delivers a completely engrossing sci-fi story. Seeing the grounded approach to how humanity might deal with a situation like this, from the approach of curiosity to the inevitable feelings of fear, is a fascinating way to tell this story. However, Arrival‘s surprising ending brings it to a place that is even more complex and interesting while delivering an emotional climax few movies can pull off.

Following his surprising directorial debut with Gone Baby Gone, Ben Affleck cements himself as a truly great filmmaker with the crime thriller The Town. Set in an area of Boston that claims to have produced more bank robbers per capita than anywhere else in the world, The Town stars Affleck as Doug MacRay, the leader of a local band of thieves who finds his work complicated when he falls for a witness to one of his recent heists.
Jeremy Renner was nominated for an Oscar for his scene-stealing role as Jem, MacRay’s best friend who serves as an unpredictable and dangerous force in their operations while also being a relentlessly loyal partner. He adds a spark of violent thrill to the excellent crime story. Affleck delivers an intense and gritty throwback to ’70s crime movies with the heist sequences making for the highlight of The Town.

Following his absence in Avengers: Infinity War, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye featured prominently in Avengers: Endgame, kicking off the movie with an emotional opening scene. Endgame takes place in the aftermath of Thanos’ victory in the previous movie, with half of the universe suddenly wiped from existence. The remaining Avengers deal with the changed world while also discovering a faint glimmer of hope in how to save the people they lost.
While this is the third Avengers movie Renner’s Hawkeye appeared in, it is the first to really put the character to good use. It sends him on an emotional and raw journey that takes Barton to some dark places while also showing him as a true hero of this cinematic universe. Serving as a culmination of the entire MCU up to that point, Avengers: Endgame pulls off a magic trick in delivering an exciting, funny, emotional, and crowd-pleasing finale.

Jeremy Renner broke out as a Hollywood leading man with his Oscar-nominated turn in the Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker. Renner stars as Sergeant First Class William James, a soldier operating in Iraq as a bomb disposal expert. Joining a new team, including the hesitant and untrusting Sergeant J. T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie). With tensions in their region increasing, James and his team face new threats around every corner.
From Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker is a bold and powerful modern war movie as well as an eye-opening look at the modern soldier. Renner is excellent as a moral and dedicated soldier who is also addicted to the constant world of danger he has found himself in. Bigelow crafts pulse-pounding sequences that will leave you on the edge of your seat, more than earning her Best Director Oscar.

Taylor Sheridan made his directorial debut in this neo-Western featuring Jeremy Renner’s best performance to date. Wind River stars Renner as Cory Lambert, a hunter living on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. When a local girl is found killed, FBI agent Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen) is sent to investigate, with Lambert helping her navigate the lands. However, he has his own plans for ensuring justice is served.
The movie is a dark and intense thriller with the frozen landscape offering an isolating and bleak atmosphere for the story. Renner makes for a grounded and intense humor haunted by his own past. It is also great to see him working alongside Olsen in a movie that is very different from their pairings in the MCU. It makes for a terrific thriller with a climatic shootout that stands as one of the most impactful in movie history.
