Juno Temple’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

The best Juno Temple movies and TV shows demonstrate just how wide the range of the Fargo and Ted Lasso star truly is. Born in London in 1989, the Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nominated actress Juno Temple has been an active presence on screens since 1997. However, her first credited appearance came in 2000’s Pandaemonium, which was directed by her father, filmmaker Julien Temple.

Juno Temple received acclaim during her early roles in films like Notes on a Scandal and Atonement, and also almost played the role of Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (though lost the role to Evanna Lynch). While she has been a consistent performer since her debut, it’s in the 2020s that her career has truly started to take off, as the best Juno Temple movies and TV shows reveal.

Unsane (2018) is a psychological horror film directed by Steven Soderbergh, starring Claire Foy as a woman involuntarily committed to a mental institution. The film explores her struggle to retain her sanity while suspecting she is being pursued by a stalker. Shot entirely on an iPhone, the movie delves into themes of mental illness and systemic abuse.

2018’s Unsane is a relatively under-the-radar psychological thriller from celebrated director Steven Soderbergh. It earns its place among the best Juno Temple movies not because of the strength of the film itself (though it was a celebrated release, as evidenced by its 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes), but because of Juno Temple’s performance as Violet. Violet in Unsane is a patient at a psychiatric hospital, and it’s unlike any other role of Temple’s career.

The unstable Violet is portrayed as an antagonist in Unsane, at least from the perspective of Claire Foy’s Sawyer. Juno Temple plays the part incredibly well, displaying a side of her talent she has yet to demonstrate in any of her other movies or TV shows. While it’s not the most central role of her career, or her most prominent appearance, Unsane stands as the perfect example of her skills in genres outside of comedies or dramas.

Far From The Maddening Crowd (2015)

Juno Temple Plays Fanny Robin

Juno Temple In Far From The Maddening Crowd

The British romantic drama Far from the Maddening Crowd was adapted from the 1874 novel of the same name by Thomas Hardy, and featured Juno Temple as part of a solid UK cast that also included Carey Mulligan, Tom Sturridge, and Michael Sheen. Juno Temple’s character, Fanny Robin, is one of the most tragic characters she’s portrayed in her career, and one that allowed her to demonstrate her skills at creating emotive tear-jerking moments in period pieces.

Set in the 19th century, Fanny’s story in Far from the Maddening Crowd is a parallel narrative to the central arc of Carey Mulligan’s Bathesba – though is arguably more memorable. Fanny’s life is turned upside-down when she misses her own wedding due to arriving at the wrong church. This leads her life down a tragic path that’s impossible for viewers to forget, with every heartwrenching moment portrayed perfectly by Juno Temple.

Atonement is a romance and war drama released in 2007 by director Joe Wright. The film stars Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Saoirse Ronan, and Romola Garai. The film takes place in 1930s England, spanning multiple years afterward as a man is wrongfully incarcerated and then must face a war, all while wanting to get back to the girl he loves.

An often-overlooked World War II movie due to its focus on a doomed romance rather than the conflict itself, 2007’s Atonement was directed by Joe Wright and based on the novel of the same name by Ian McEwen. The cast is led by Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, whose performances both ensured that Atonement was released to significant critical acclaim. However, it also marks one of the best Juno Temple movies thanks to her role as Lola Quincey.

In Atonement, Lola (the 15-year-old cousin of Keira Knightley’s Cecilia and Saoirse Ronan’s Briony Tallis) is violently sexually assaulted by an unseen man on the grounds of the Tallis estate. Due to witnessing McAvoy’s Robbie making love to Cecilia, Briony falsely accuses him of being the man responsible for Lola’s traumatic ordeal. It was an incredibly complex role for the young Juno Temple, and the nuance required ensures that her appearance Atonement, albeit not a central character, remains a career highlight.

Notes on a Scandal, the 2006 psychological thriller from director Richard Eyre, was Juno Temple’s second-ever movie appearance. What’s more, her performance as Polly Hart ensures it remains remembered as one of her best. The film, which stars Judi Dench, Cate Blanchett, and Bill Nighy, focuses on the strained relationship between two teachers. Barbara (Dench) befriends new art teacher, Sheba (Blanchett). However, things become incredibly strained when it emerges that Sheba is in a romantic relationship with an underage student.

Juno Temple was 17 when Notes on a Scandal released, and she played the teenage daughter of Sheba, Polly Hart. Temple plays the part of the rebellious teen perfectly, and her chemistry with Cate Blanchett in particular helped to ensure that her role in Notes on a Scandal became an important foundational milestone in her early career.

2024’s Venom: The Last Dance may not have been the most successful entry in Sony’s Venom trilogy, and was largely seen as underwhelming by many fans. However, while there are many valid criticisms of writer-director Kelly Marcel’s finale for the Venom film saga, it’s place as one of the best Juno Temple movies is hard to dispute. In Venom: The Last Dance, Juno Temple plays Dr. Teddy Payne, a scientific expert working for the government to unearth the true reasons behind the presence of Symbiotes on Earth.

Alongside Tom Hardy, Juno Temple’s Dr. Payne is arguably the main character of Venom: The Last Dance. What’s more, the film represents Temple’s first starring role in a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster, making it an important indicator of the future trajectory of her career after her celebrated appearances in the likes of Ted Lasso and Fargo season 5.

The Offer is a Paramount+ limited series telling the untold story behind the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. The ten episodes center on producer Albert S. The 2022 miniseries The Offer delves into the fascinating journey and effort that it took to get one of the most celebrated movies ever made, 1972’s The Godfather, to screens. The ensemble cast each plays real people involved in the creation process, such as Miles Teller as producer Albert S. Ruddy. Juno Temple appears as the only female actor in the main cast, playing the often-overlooked secretary of Albert S. Ruddy, Bettye McCartt.

Through Juno Temple’s portrayal of McCarrt, The Offer was able to explore issues like sexism and the seemingly deliberate downplaying of the contributions women made to many important behind-the-scenes business decisions integral to the making of The Godfather. Juno Temple won a Satellite Award for her performance, and was nominated for a Critics Choice Award in the category of Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.

Palmer is a handful of entries among the best Juno Temple movies and TV shows that are exclusive originals for Apple TV+. The 2021 drama, from director Fisher Stevens from a screenplay written by Cheryl Guerriero, is an insightful and grounded exploration of redemption and whether it’s truly possible to escape the past. Temple stars alongside Justin Timberlake in Palmer, and her role as Shelly Burdette is one of the most complex (and tragic) of her career so far.

In the film, Justin Timberlake’s Eddie Palmer finds himself struggling to reintegrate with society after 12 years behind bars. He strikes up a friendship and, eventually becomes a surrogate parent to neighbor Sam. Juno Temple plays Shelly, Sam’s mother, a struggling drug addict whose neglect prompts Eddie to seek permanent custody of the 12-year-old. It’s one of the most emotive characters Juno Temple has ever played, and one that displays just how wide her range as a performer truly is.

Killer Joe is a dark comedy thriller directed by William Friedkin. The film stars Matthew McConaughey as a detective who is also a contract killer hired by a desperate young man, played by Emile Hirsch, to murder his mother for insurance money. As the plot unfolds, the characters are drawn into a violent and morally complex web of deception and betrayal.

The gothic crime drama and black comedy Killer Joe, from director William Friedkin, may be one of the lesser-known films among the best Juno Temple movies, though this doesn’t detract from the strength of her performance (not does it mean it shouldn’t be considered perhaps her strongest performance in a feature-length project). 2011’s Killer Joe focuses on a family who seek to kill their estranged mother/ex-wife to collect her life insurance policy.

Juno Temple plays Dottie Smith in Killer Joe, the daughter of Adele (the target of the murder plan). However, over the course of the movie, Dottie develops a close relationship with the hitman the family hires, Joe (Matthew McConaughey). It’s a complex and nuanced role that allowed Temple to display her comedic talents as well as her dramatic skills, and Killer Joe currently sits at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) is an American football coach who moves to England when he’s hired to manage a struggling soccer team despite having no experience. With cynical players and a doubtful town, Ted will have to convince them that he’s fit for the job. Ted Lasso has become one of Apple TV Plus’ most successful shows, earning over 10 Primetime Emmys.

While her role as one of the main cast members in Ted Lasso came late in her career, the Apple TV+ sports comedy instantly became one of the best Juno Temple TV shows (and one of the strongest original series to make its way to Apple’s streaming service). Developed by Jason Sudeikis (who also stars as the titular Ted Lasso), the show focuses on a U.S. football coach who finds himself heading a soccer team in the UK.

Juno Temple plays Keeley Jones in Ted Lasso, a perky and peppy young woman who starts the show as the girlfriend of one of the players on Ted’s team, AFC Richmond. However, as the show progresses, Keeley quickly becomes an important figure in her own right, and a central vehicle for the show’s analysis of toxic masculinity in sports. Temple received several award nominations for her performance, including two Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Juno Temple’s career in the early 2020s may have been defined by the role of Keeley Jones in Ted Lasso, but this isn’t her best TV show. When it comes to the best Juno Temple TV show, the most deserving is inarguably her starring role in season 5 of Fargo, in which she played Dorothy “Dot” Lyon (a role that couldn’t be more different than her Ted Lasso character). Dot starts the series as a seemingly innocent homemaker, but she soon finds her mysterious past starts bleeding into her present.

Season 5 of Fargo brought Juno Temple significant critical acclaim. She was nominated for a string of awards for her performance, including a Golden Globe and Critics Choice in the categories of Best Actress – Miniseries and Best Actress in a Movie/Miniseries, respectively. She was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology series or movie. While she didn’t win, this doesn’t detract from just how strong her performance in Fargo season 5 truly was, and it’s hard to argue its place as the best Juno Temple movie or TV show.
