List of Finance Ministers of India (1947 to 2024)

The Ministry of Finance (Vitta Maṃtralaya) is an important department of the Indian government, responsible for managing the country’s economy and serving as the Ministry of Finance. Its responsibilities include taxation, financial legislation, supervision of financial institutions, capital markets and currency regulation, banking services and central and state finance. It also plays a key role in preparing the federal budget.

The ministry is the apex authority of four central civil service departments: the Indian Revenue Service, the Indian Audit and Accounts Service, the Indian Economic Service and the Indian Civil Accounts Service. Additionally, it oversees the Indian Cost and Management Accounts Service, which is one of the Central Commercial Services.

Sir Ramasamy Chetty Kandasamy Shanmukham Chetty KCIE (October 17, 1892 – May 5, 1953) was the first Finance Minister of independent India. He presented the country’s first budget on November 26, 1947. Current Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has served for five years, during which she presented six budgets from 2019 to 2023, including a medium-term budget in 2024. In the federal budget in February 2024, she became the first finance minister to submit seven consecutive budgets.
