Marvel Contest of Champions Gameplay

In Marvel Contest of Champions, you play as a Summoner, handpicked by the Collector to assemble a team of Marvel heroes and villains. The game’s combat takes place in a 3D arena with 2D motion, similar to games like Injustice and Mortal Kombat. Starting with two 1-star characters, you can unlock higher-star heroes from a pool of 253 heroes.

Combat uses an energy system that you can charge over time or replenish manually. Controls are touch-based and include light, medium, and heavy attacks, blocking, and dodging. Characters can be upgraded with ISO-8 and gold coins, while alliances, dungeons, and various in-game currencies add to the depth of the game.

Marvel Contest of Champions Development

Marvel Contest of Champions, developed by Kabam, is a one-on-one fighting game with multiplayer and RPG elements. Creative director Cuz Parry envisioned a game where players could engage in arcade-style battles against a slew of Marvel heroes and villains.

The game was released for iOS and Android in 2014 and was such a success that Dave & Buster’s launched an arcade version in 2019. In 2015, plans were made for a release in China, but it was later shut down. Marvel adapted the game into a comic book series in June 2015. The series launched a spin-off “Marvel Realm of Champions” in 2020, set in the same universe. However, on January 13, 2022, “Realm of Champions” announced that it would be closed on March 31 of that year.
