The Islamic Republic of Iran was established in 1980 and has had several presidents since then. The president of Iran is the highest elected official in Iran and has enormous power.

Recently, on May 19, 2024, Iran’s most recent president, Ebrahim Raisi, died in a tragic helicopter crash. Raisi was the eighth president of Iran. Raisi’s death left the presidency of Iran vacant.

The Iranian Revolution of 1979 and the referendum that established the Islamic Republic led to a new constitution for the new Iranian government.

Khamenei ordered the election of the Assembly of Experts. This group of experts was tasked with drafting a constitution. On October 24, 1979, the Assembly submitted the constitution. Subsequently, the Supreme Leader Khamenei and Iranian Prime Minister Mehdi Bazargan approved the constitution.

Under the 1979 constitution, the Supreme Leader is designated as the head of state. In addition, the Prime Minister and the President are designated as the heads of government. The position of Prime Minister was abolished in 1989 following a referendum.

First President and Presidential Election

On January 25, 1980, Iran held its first presidential election, and Abulhassan Bani Sadr was elected as the first president with 76% of the votes.

On June 22, 1981, Bani Sadr was impeached by the parliament. Before the election on July 24, 1981, the Interim Presidential Council assumed the duties of the president.

Next, Mohammad Ali Rajaei was elected as the next President of Iran on July 24, 1981. The President took office on August 2. The President was in office for less than a month. On August 30, 1981, both the President and the Prime Minister were assassinated. What was the result? The Interim Presidential Council took over the responsibilities until the new President Ali Khamenei was elected on October 13, 1981.

Finally, Ibrahim Raisi died

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, considered a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, died recently when his helicopter crashed in bad weather in a mountainous area near the Azerbaijan border. The charred wreckage of the plane carrying Raisi and six other passengers was found on Monday after a search for the helicopter during a night of heavy snowstorms.
