A thousand years later, the ocean chooses Moana, the daughter of Motunui chief Tui, to embark on a journey to restore the Heart of Te Fiti. Moana’s parents, Tui and Xina, want to prepare her for her future role as chief of the island and discourage her from venturing beyond the reef. However, when the blight strikes the island, Moana suggests exploring the ocean to find a solution.
Tui bans her, but Moana’s grandmother Tara reveals their voyager heritage and explains that Te’ka’s darkness is poisoning the land. Tara entrusts her heart to Moana and urges her to find Maui and restore it. Tara falls ill and on her deathbed instructs Moana to embark on her journey.
Moana sets sail with her pet rooster Heihei and is shipwrecked on an island, where she meets Maui. Despite Maui’s reluctance, Moana demands the heart back, but ends up trapped in a cave. She escapes and convinces Maui to help her by explaining the consequences of his actions.
They face off against a coconut pirate named Kakamora, and later face off against the giant coconut crab Tamatoa to reclaim Maui’s fishhook. Moana’s quick thinking allows them to escape with the hook, and Maui shares his backstory with Moana.
After arriving at Te Fiti’s island, Moana and Maui face Teka’s attack. Despite the damage to Maui’s hook, Moana refused to give up. Maui abandoned her, but with the encouragement of Tara’s spirit, Moana found her true calling. She retrieves the heart and returns to face Teka. Maui returns to aid Moana, and they fight Teka, causing Maui’s Hook to be destroyed.
