Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is a first-person shooter video game developed by Sledgehammer Games and published by Activision. The game is the twentieth installment in the Call of Duty series and the third installment in the rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series, following the events of 2022’s Modern Warfare II.

The game was released on multiple platforms including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on November 10, 2023. Modern Warfare III retains the realism and contemporary setting of its predecessors, continuing the series’ overarching narrative.

The storyline revolves around Task Force 141, a multinational special forces unit, as they hunt down Vladimir Makarov, a Russian ultranationalist and terrorist who plans to start World War 3. The multiplayer portion of the game features remasters of all 16 base maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, with more maps available in post-launch updates.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 gameplay

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III features gameplay similar to its predecessor Modern Warfare II and the wider Call of Duty series. It retains features such as swipe cancel and introduces “Open Combat Missions” to the campaign, which allow players to approach objectives more freely.

In multiplayer, all 16 maps in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be available at launch. Players can vote for maps in the matchmaking lobby, a feature that has been reintroduced after some games removed it recently. The game will also increase player health to increase “time to kill” (TTK).

The “red dot” minimap, absent from Modern Warfare 2019, makes a comeback, showing the location of enemies when they fire unsuppressed weapons. Classic game modes like Kill Confirmed and Hardpoint return, along with a new mode called Cutthroat. Ground War and War Mode return, complete with dedicated maps, and AI moderation to identify and report bad behavior. A dozen new multiplayer maps will be released post-launch.

The new open-world PvE Zombies mode, developed in collaboration between Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games, is a highlight. Unlike traditional turn-based zombies, this mode follows the DMZ mode structure, with up to 24 players forming squads to fight zombies and AI-controlled human enemies to complete objectives, collect loot, and extract items. The mode introduces “zones” instead of rounds, with escalating difficulty levels. Aetherstorms and narrative-driven story missions add depth to the experience.
