It is named after two legendary cricketers: Allan Border from Australia and Sunil Gavaskar from India, both outstanding captains of their respective teams.

Since its inception, India has won 10 of 16 series while Australia has won 5 series, one of which was a draw. Notably, India has enjoyed impressive success in Australia, winning both series in 2018-19 and 2020-21.
The next edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will begin on November 22, 2024, and will include five Test matches, marking the historic first time that five Test matches will be played on Australian soil since the trophy was inaugurated.
The upcoming series will be crucial for both the teams as it will also affect their ranking in the World Test Championship.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy competition between India and Australia is held approximately every two years. The previous series took place in early 2023 and the next series is scheduled to start on November 22, 2024.
As of 2024, the record for most wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is held by Ravichandran Ashwin from India, who took a total of 114 wickets in 42 innings .
He is followed by Anil Kumble who took 111 wickets in 38 innings. Harbhajan Singh ranks third with 95 wickets in 35 innings. However, the top spot is Australia’s Nathon Lyon, who took a total of 116 wickets in 47 innings.
