NASA Astronaut Sunita Williams Walk on Space: When is Return Planned

Sunita Williams, one of two stranded NASA astronauts, enjoyed a much-needed change of scenery Thursday on her first spacewalk since arriving at the International Space Station (ISS) more than seven months ago .

Space station commander and Indian-born astronaut Williams teamed up with NASA’s Nick Hague to take on long-delayed maintenance work outside the space station.

Key tasks accomplished during NASA spacewalks

Astronauts performed several important tasks, including:

  • NICER Maintenance: Upgrading the Neutron Star Internal Composition Explorer (NICER) X-ray telescope.
  • Rate Gyroscope Replacement: Install new rate gyroscopes to help control the International Space Station’s orientation.
  • Docking Adapter Maintenance: Replace the reflector assembly on the international docking adapter for navigation.
  • Future preparation: Check tools and areas for upcoming maintenance on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer.

NASA says the mission is critical to keeping the International Space Station running smoothly and extending its lifespan.

Williams and astronaut Bucky Wilmore plan to go out again next week.

When will astronaut Sunita Williams return from space?

Williams and Wilmore were originally scheduled for a week-long test flight, launching last June aboard Boeing’s new Starliner capsule. However, due to problems with Starliner, their stay was extended and NASA ordered the capsule to return without passengers.

SpaceX faced more delays as it delayed the launch of its replacement, leaving astronauts Williams and Wilmore stranded until late March or early April — ten months past the original launch date.

NASA’s first spacewalk in months

It was NASA’s first astronaut spacewalk after last summer’s canceled spacewalk. A U.S. spacewalk was briefly suspended due to a cooling circuit problem that saw water seeping into an astronaut’s spacesuit airlock. The problem has since been resolved by NASA.
