The 2024–25 UEFA Nations League is the fourth edition of the UEFA Nations League tournament. The competition will take place from September to November 2024 for the league phase, in March 2025 for the League A quarter-finals, and League A/B and B/C play-offs, in June 2025 for the Nations League Finals, and in March 2026 for the League C/D play-offs.

Spain is the defending champion, having won the 2023 finals.

The UEFA Nations League is an international football competition designed for UEFA member associations’ senior men’s national teams. Established in 2018, this league aims to replace uncompetitive friendly matches with meaningful contests among teams of similar strength.

Structure and Format

The tournament is organised into four leagues: League A, League B, League C, and League D. Each league consists of groups where teams compete in a round-robin format, playing both home and away matches. The structure allows for promotion and relegation between leagues based on performance:

  • League A: Features the highest-ranked teams, with four groups of four teams each.
  • Leagues B and C: Also consist of 16 teams each, divided into groups.
  • League D: Contains fewer teams, typically six, divided into two groups.

At the end of each league phase, the top teams from Leagues B, C, and D are promoted to the next higher league, while the bottom teams in Leagues A, B, and C face relegation.

Finals and Knockout Stages

The winners of the groups in League A advance to the Nations League Finals, which include semi-finals, a third-place match, and a final to determine the champion. Starting from the 2024/25 edition, a new knockout round will be introduced, allowing group winners and runners-up from League A to compete in home-and-away quarterfinals before reaching the finals.

Qualification for Major Tournaments

The UEFA Nations League also serves as a pathway for qualification to major tournaments like the UEFA European Championship (EURO) and FIFA World Cup. Teams that do not qualify through traditional methods can earn playoff spots based on their Nations League performance.

Historical Context

The inaugural tournament began in September 2018, with Portugal winning the first title in June 2019. Subsequent editions have seen France (2021) and Spain (2023) crowned champions. As of now, Spain holds the title as the most recent champion.
