The offer involves a “date” with their introverted 19-year-old son, Percy, in exchange for a car, as they hope to help him escape his inhibitions before attending college at Princeton University.

To seduce Percy, Mattie visits him at the animal shelter where he volunteers. However, a misunderstanding occurs and Percy misunderstands Maddie’s intentions, leading him to beat her with a mace in self-defense. Despite the awkwardness, they agreed to go on a date the next day. Maddie and Percy find themselves skinny dipping at the beach at night, but have their clothes stolen by rowdy teenagers.

Maddie boldly fights off the teens naked, frightening Percy who insists on going home. Maddie drives off without him, but he chases her naked and they elude the police. As their relationship deepens, Maddie and Percy try to become intimate, but Percy’s anxiety causes him to develop a rash. Maddie took care of him and treated his anxiety.

As their dating journey continues, Maddie and Percy share more information about themselves and grow closer. Both admit they’ve never been to prom, so they reenact their prom night and enjoy a nice dinner together.

During the event, Percy meets a former school acquaintance who invites him to a party. Disagreeing over future plans, Percy attends the party while Maddie searches for him. She eventually found him after he took ibuprofen and drank alcohol. Percy opens up and admits his love for Maddie.

Unexpectedly, Percy found out about Maddie’s arrangement with her parents. He invited her to have lunch with them, but he deliberately crashed her car into a tree and began having sex before abruptly ending their relationship. Maddie uses the damaged car to pay off her debt and decides to sell the house to a couple named Jim and Sarah. With her newfound resources, she plans to move to California. At a blender in Princeton, Maddie reunites with Percy and they agree to remain friends.

Eventually, Maddie drove Percy to Princeton to help him get settled while she made the journey to California. She shared the news about adopting Milo, a former police dog recovering from cocaine addiction who they met at the animal shelter where Percy volunteered.
