Octopath Traveler 2

Octopath Traveler II is a video game produced by Square Enix and Acquire. It is the follow-up to 2018’s Octopath Traveler and the third game in the series following the 2020 mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. However, this new game has different characters and a new setting.

The game will be released globally on February 24, 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows. This is the first time the Octopath game has been launched on PlayStation consoles. Versions for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S are planned for release in early 2024.

• First character choice:
  • Choose your first character wisely, as you must keep them until you complete their storyline.
  • Choosing the “wrong” character doesn’t put you at a huge disadvantage.
• Enemy name color code:
  • white: health
  • Yellow: On the verge of death
  • Red: dying
  • Use this as an estimate when selecting goals.
• Focus on one enemy:
  • Focuses damage on one enemy at a time, especially broken enemies.
  • Smashing an enemy (without a shield) makes them vulnerable and takes more damage.

Octopath Traveler 2 gameplay

The gameplay of Octopath Traveler II is similar to the first game, following the style of traditional Japanese role-playing games. Players control eight different characters, each with their own reasons for exploring the game world. Each character has a special “path action” that allows players to interact with non-player characters to receive rewards or support for their cause.

In this sequel, there are now distinct day and night sections, affecting available path operations. For example, during the day, character duels can be held to learn new combat skills, while at night, characters can be bribed for information or items using in-game currency.

The game retains the turn-based combat system from the first installment, featuring “Breakthrough” and “Ascension” mechanics. Enemies all have hidden weaknesses, and once discovered, exploiting them will temporarily weaken the enemy. Boost points are accumulated each turn to allow for additional moves in future turns. New to the combat system is “Latent Power,” a special ability unique to each character that recharges when taking damage or defeating an enemy.

In Octopath Traveler II, the story maintains the same structure of following the journeys of eight different characters, but now introduces a new set of characters in an entirely new setting called Solistia. The world is more modern, similar to the nineteenth or twentieth century, and has seen the emergence of technologies such as the steam engine.

The main characters include Anea, a dancer who aspires to be a star like her mother, Patitio, a businessman dedicated to eradicating poverty, Hikari, a warrior prince who regains his kingdom for peace, and others who all have their own unique goals. As players progress through four to five separate chapters for each character, as well as two “crossing paths” chapters in which the two characters work together, they will discover a mysterious organization called the Order of Moonshadow, which worships the dark god Wade the evil one.

The Travelers ultimately foiled the Order’s plan to bring about eternal night based on Wade’s teachings. The epilogue reveals the resurrection of Vader’s organization, giving players the chance to face a powerful optional boss, Galdra the Fallen, by completing certain side stories.
