Steve Carell’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

The best Steve Carell movies and TV shows feature some great comedies on both the big and small screen and have resulted in great awards recognition. Carell got his start in the 1980s when he was part of a student-run improvisational comedy troupe while attending Denison University in Granville, Ohio. He then got noticed when he performed with the Second City and got his first movie role in the comedy film Curly Sue. He also got some TV work at the time by appearing on The Dana Carvey Show in 1996.

However, his big break came in 1999 when he signed on as a correspondent for The Daily Show, working alongside Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. He worked on that show until 2005, and by the time he left, he was a major television and movie star. That was thanks to getting roles in the Will Ferrell movie Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Judd Apatow’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin in 2004 and 2005, followed by him taking on his life-changing role in the American version of The Office in 2005, making him a massive star.

Despicable Me is an interesting movie franchise. It received mostly negative to mixed reviews from critics, and audiences seem ready to dismiss it as a film series that relies too much on the little yellow Minions. However, it has been a massive success, and it seems critic-proof, with people flocking to theaters to see every new movie when it is released. The first movie was a redemption story. It stars Gru as a master criminal who wants to be the best of all time and sets out to steal the moon. However, somehow, along the way, he becomes a hero.

Space Force is a Netflix comedy series from The Office creator Greg Daniels and Steve Carell. Carell stars as General Mark R. Naird, who is appointed the leader of the newly established Space Force branch of the US military. Partly due to budget cuts at Netflix and a loss of subscribers on the platform, Space Force was canceled in 2022 after two seasons.

After leaving The Office, Steve Carell signed back on for another workplace comedy. However, this workplace was one unlike any other as he joined the cast of Space Force. This Netflix comedy followed the people working on creating a sixth brand of the United States Armed Forces, known as the United States Space Force. Carell took the lead as General Mark R. Naird, the Space Force’s first Chief of Space Operations. The first season follows Carell’s general as he fights to get his team to the moon by the president’s orders.

The cast was incredible, with names like John Malkovich, Noah Emmerich, Jane Lynch, Ben Schwartz, Lisa Kudrow, and Diedrich Bader joining Carell along the way. The series poked a lot of fun at the government pouring so much money into a military force in space and the ridiculous orders the president gives them. While it only lasted two seasons, the show received four Primetime Emmy nominations, and Carell was nominated for a People’s Choice Award in 2020.

A fictionalized depiction of the events surrounding the financial crisis of 2007-2008, The Big Short employs narrative techniques such as fourth-wall breaks to succinctly explain financial concepts to its audience, using Michael Lewis’s 2010 book as a template. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt.

The Big Short is unlike any movie Steve Carell has ever appeared in. The film is based on the true-life story of the 2007-2008 financial crisis caused by the United States housing bubble. Based on the book, The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis, Carell plays Mark Baum, the leader of FrontPoint Partners, a small independent trading firm. Baum is based on Steve Eisman, a businessman who profited from the collapse of the U.S. housing bubble.

The cast is impressive, with Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, and more in starring roles. The film also has several real-life celebs playing themselves as they explain financial concepts to the audience by breaking the fourth wall. Directed by Paul Feig, The Big Short received universal acclaim and was shockingly historically accurate despite the absurd circumstances. It earned five Oscar nominations, winning Best Adapted Screenplay, while Carell was nominated for an AACTA Award.

In 2011, Steve Carell starred in a very unique romantic comedy. This was a movie that focused on two generations of people and showed off the trouble with dating both early in life and later as well. Carell plays Cal Weaver, a man whose wife had an affair with a co-worker and asks for a divorce. Cal decides to check out the dating scene again and starts to frequent a bar where he meets a younger guy named Jacob (Ryan Gosling), a womanizer who helps Cal get his feet under him again.

However, things get complicated when Jacob falls in love with Cal’s daughter Hannah (Emma Stone), and knowing about Jacob’s womanizing ways, Cal is against it. In the middle of it all is Robbie, Cal’s eighth-grade son. The movie received mostly positive reviews, with critics praising the script and the fantastic cast. Carell received nominations at the Teen Choice and People’s Choice Awards, while Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling received high praise as well for their roles.

Steve Carell got his first widespread national attention when he joined The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as a correspondent. The Daily Show is a news talk show that adds a lot of comedy and irreverence to present-day news stories. Jon Stewart was the host, but Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert often stole the show away from Stewart with their often hilarious reports on whatever the news of the day was at the time. Carell based his correspondent on the often dimwitted, easy-to-please TV news reported of the era.

This was where Carell really showed off his improv talents, as he always seemed game to do anything and everything to himself in the name of a good laugh. His best segments remain memorable today, including “Even Stevphen” with Stephen Colbert and “Producer Pete.”

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is a comedy film starring Will Ferrell and Christina Applegate that follows the titular Ron as a San Diego news anchor. The movie satirizes the news culture of the 1970s, where men ruled the airwaves, and here, Ron Burgundy is the king. But when the station hires Veronica Corningstone, a female anchor, Ron and the other men’s egos are shaken, forcing them to reckon with the changing social landscape.

Before taking his starring role in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Steve Carell got his first major movie roles as a supporting character in some big-screen comedies, first opposite Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty and then in the Will Ferrell comedy Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. In both films, he proved he had what it takes to bring the laughs on the big screen, and they set up his career for success. In Anchorman, he played Brick Tamland, a dim-witted weatherman at KVWM.

Carell was part of the great ensemble of news reporters on the show, alongside Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, and David Koechner. The movie received mixed reviews, but it was a huge fan favorite and ended up as a modern-day cult classic soon after it hit home video. It even received a sequel in 2013, and the cast has reprised these roles more than once on different properties. While Carell played mostly a man-child in Anchorman, it helped set up the character type he would play for the next decade.

By 2008, the world knew Steve Carell as one of the funniest actors working at the time. That made his role in Little Miss Sunshine such a surprising one. The tragicomedy was about a little girl named Olive (Abigail Breslin), who has dreams of competing in the “Little Miss Sunshine” beauty pageant. Her family then jumps in their Volkswagen minivan and takes a road trip to help her achieve her dream. Carell plays Frank, Olive’s uncle, and her father’s brother, a gay scholar who has lived with the family since a suicide attempt.

It was shocking to see Carell playing a depressed character who often feels like there is nothing left to live for. However, most comedy actors have a basis in tragedy as well, and this gave Carell a chance to show off his other side and prove he was more than just a funnyman but a fantastic character actor as well. Alan Arkin won an Oscar for playing Olive’s grandfather, and Breslin was nominated for an Oscar at the age of 10. The entire cast won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

The Morning Show is a drama series that explores the cutthroat world of morning news and the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning. Told through the lens of two complicated women (Aniston and Witherspoon) working to navigate the minefield of high-octane jobs while facing crises in both their personal and professional lives, The Morning Show is an unapologetically candid drama that looks at the power dynamics between women and men, and women and women, in the workplace.

In 2019, Steve Carell took on a difficult role in the Apple TV+ series The Morning Show. Season 1 has its basis in the #MeToo movement and following the allegations of sexual misconduct on morning talk shows like Good Morning America and The Today Show. Steve Carell plays Mitch Kessler in the show’s first two seasons. He was a popular morning talk show host who was fired after he was accused of sexual misconduct. While Mitch leaves the show, he remains one of the main characters as he tries to navigate life away from his career.

However, the main plot follows a veteran news anchor (Jennifer Aniston) who fights to keep her role as the studio brings in a new younger anchor (Reese Witherspoon) to replace Mitch. Ageism plays into the story, as it seems the producers feel a younger, attractive host would bring in more viewers, and this all plays into the original problem with Mitch’s sexual misconduct allegations. The show received several Primetime Emmy nominations, with Carell nominated in 2020 for Outstanding Lead Actor.

Easily the most successful movie that Steve Carell ever headlined was the 2005 comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin. This film started as a sketch that Carell had created during his time at Second City. Judd Apatow helped him turn it into a movie, and then Apatow directed Carell in the film, which helped turn the actor into a star. Carell stars as Andy Stitzer, a 40-year-old who has never had luck with women and has decided to live alone with his geek hobbies (collecting action figures, etc…)

When his co-workers learn he is a virgin, they set out to help him have sex for the first time. This is a sex comedy, but it isn’t sex that is the biggest selling point. The 40-Year-Old Virgin was one of the top-ranked films of 2005, was a box office success, and led Carell to great heights on TV and the big screen in the decades to come.

It doesn’t always work out when an American television network decides to remake a television show from another country. However, when NBC decided to adapt The Office, it was a massive success thanks mainly to the casting choices for the hit comedy series. The Office is set up as a mockumentary with an unseen film crew following the day-to-day activities of the fictional paper company of Dunder Mifflin. Steve Carell took on the role of the company’s regional manager, Michael Scott.

He embodied the role of the overconfident yet delusional manager who could mostly block out anything that disagreed with how he saw the world and the business he was tasked with running. He was the perfect fool for the employees to work around, and he perfected that ridiculous character who was at times a sympathetic everyman and, at other times, a brash yet incompetent upper-level boss. Steve Carell received six straight Primetime Emmy nominations for his performance and won a Golden Globe in 2006.
