Initially, Superman & Lois was intended to be part of the Arrowverse, connecting with other superhero shows like Supergirl and The Flash. It started out as a spinoff of Supergirl , with its first season serving as a backdoor pilot for the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event. However, the planned Supergirl and Batwoman crossover was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, accepting the job would require John Henry and Natalie to move to the metropolis, and Natalie would have to enroll their son Mateo in the same school. The biggest cliffhanger of the season finale is the ongoing battle between Superman and Doomsday. After realizing Doomsday cannot be killed, Superman lures him into space, and the episode ends with the two adversaries crashing into each other on the moon.
