The game introduces an exciting story mode called Dark Awakening, which takes place six months after the events of the previous version. The core of Tekken 8 revolves around the intense conflict between father and son duo Mishima Kazuya and Kazama Jin. Jin attempts to end the turmoil in the family lineage by confronting and defeating his father, Kazuya.
The story unfolds through 32 characters, a mix of familiar faces from the past and new additions, each contributing their own storyline to the overarching plot. Development on Tekken 8 was initially underway at Evo 2022 in August, and will be introduced in more detail at Sony’s State of Play event next month.
Compared with its predecessor, the game uses Unreal Engine 5 and has upgraded graphics, enhanced combat elements and novel systems. Two innovative mechanics, the Heat system and Tornado Strike, add a fresh dynamic to gameplay, giving players exciting new ways to engage in combat.

Tekken 8 gameplay
The gameplay of Tekken 8 retains the classic fighting game style from previous Tekken games. This emphasis is reflected in the introduction of the “Heat” system, a new mechanic that enhances characters in a variety of ways.

When a character enters the “hot” state, they deal chip damage, gain an additional action set, and witness changes to certain action attributes, such as powerful guard breaks. Additionally, fighters in “heat” mode can perform a sprint cancel, thereby increasing their maneuverability. The “heat” state timer can be stopped by using specific actions, adding a strategic layer to the gameplay.
Tekken 8 introduces technical updates, such as modifications to the “Rage” system. “Frenzy Drive” evolves into “Heat Crush”, which is a super move under the “Heat” system. The “screw” mechanism is replaced by a “tornado” extender, causing the opponent to quickly fall to the ground. Hazards are integrated into certain stages, with destructible walls and floors, enhancing the overall combat experience.
The game focuses on a more cinematic combat experience, which is evident in its emphasis on staged destruction and character reactions. All character models and voice acting are brand new, bringing a fresh visual and auditory experience. Online mode introduces “Arcade Quest,” a battle lobby offering an arcade environment, online battles, and tournaments.
“Tekken 8” uses Unreal Engine 5, creating a next-generation engine for the fighting game genre. Importantly, the game supports cross-platform play, allowing players on PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S to compete against each other, fostering a more inclusive gaming community. Tekken 8 combines innovative mechanics, technological advances, and cinematic elements to enhance its overall appeal to both experienced and novice players.
