The plot of the next three days

In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Lara Brennan was sentenced to life in prison for a murder she claimed she did not commit. Three years later, Laura’s relationship with her son Luke soured, and her husband John struggled to maintain their connection during prison visits.

Despite their efforts, Laura’s appeal was unsuccessful and her lawyers advised John to accept the evidence against her. According to witnesses, Laura was seen leaving the crime scene and her boss was brutally attacked with a fire extinguisher.

Although Laura insists she hit the real killer, her fingerprints are found on the murder weapon and the victim’s blood is found on her coat. With no legal options left, Laura attempts suicide, forcing John to take drastic measures to free her from prison. Looking for guidance, John turned to former prisoner Damon Pennington, who had written a book about his seven successful escapes.

Over the next three months, John carefully studied the day-to-day affairs and operations within the Allegheny County Jail. In order to obtain a forged passport, he got into trouble with a drug dealer who robbed and beat him in a bar. Eventually, John obtained the fake documents from a deaf motorcyclist for $3,700. He also purchased a handgun for his plan.

During a tense moment inside the prison where bump keys are being tested, John vomits outside, attracting the attention of the detective who arrests Laura. Suspicious of his activities, they followed him to his home, believing he planned to sell the house and his belongings.

John also learned how to break into the medical lab van that was responsible for Laura’s diabetes testing. After learning that Laura would be transferred to a maximum security prison in three days, John found that he would not be able to complete the sale of the house in time.

So he considers robbing a bank, but eventually gives up due to stress. In his agony, he nearly ran over a mother and her son. An argument with Laura leads to her confessing her crime in a rage. However, John refused to believe her. To fund his scheme, he followed a local drug dealer to a meth lab and set fire to the building, forcing the criminal to hand over the cash.

A shootout ensued, resulting in the death of one criminal. John drove the injured dealer to the hospital, but unfortunately, the man was shot and killed by his own boss. John left the body at a roadside bus stop, damaging his taillight in the process. The father discovers his ticket, realizes John’s intentions, and they say goodbye to each other.

As John set his plan in motion, he cut the lab’s phone lines and performed a fake blood test in the van, which revealed that Laura had a condition called hyperkalemia. Meanwhile, John leaves Luke at the birthday party. As the doctor failed to reach the laboratory, Laura was transferred to the hospital. Detectives investigate the meth lab incident, track John’s broken taillight, and break into his empty house to deduce his plan to rescue Laura.

At the hospital, John incapacitates Laura’s guards and convinces her to escape with him. Confronted by detectives, they manage to blend in with a group of Pittsburgh Steelers fans and board the subway. John pulled the emergency stop switch, allowing them to hide from the police and escape in a nearby getaway car he had prepared. Realizing that time was running out to retrieve Luke from the zoo, John turned onto the highway, promising to find their son later.

In a desperate moment, Laura considered opening the car door and risking her life on the road, but John saved her in time. They proceed to pick up Luke from the zoo. Along the way, they picked up an elderly couple stranded at a blocked train station and used them as cover to get through a police checkpoint. John drove the couple to Buffalo, New York, and then to the Canadian airport.

John, Lala and Luke board a flight to Venezuela with fake passports, successfully evading authorities who are misled by John’s deliberately left behind fragments of his escape plan.

Investigators return to the murder scene and a key flashback reveals Laura’s innocence. A detective comes close to discovering a button that would confirm Laura’s absence. Meanwhile, in a hotel room in Caracas, John took a photo of his sleeping wife and son, capturing their moment of relief and triumph after their difficult journey.
