Rudolf Höss, commandant of Auschwitz, lived a seemingly idyllic life with his wife Hedwig and their children next to the concentration camp in 1943. Despite constant reminders of the suffering outside the garden walls, Höss focused on family outings and garden care, while servants took care of household chores.
After being promoted to deputy inspector, Höss reluctantly leaves Berlin, leaving a distraught Hedwig behind. Hedwig’s mother, terrified by the approach of the concentration camp, leaves in a hurry. Meanwhile, a Polish girl secretly hides food for the prisoners.
Hoss returns to Auschwitz to oversee the mass extermination operation, with the horror still fresh in his mind. After a party, he confesses his evil thoughts to Hedwig. As he leaves the Berlin office, he retches, symbolizing his inner turmoil. The film ends with him falling into darkness, reflecting on his horrific actions.

Area of Interest Review
Zone of Interest, Jonathan Glazer’s adaptation of Martin Amis’ novel, delves into the disturbing contrast between domestic bliss and the horrors of the Holocaust. Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp, leads a quiet family life with his wife Hedwig and their children, oblivious to the atrocities taking place outside his idyllic home.
As the film depicts their separation, screams and gunfire can be heard from a nearby concentration camp, while Höss’s unsettling interactions with a female prisoner hint at his degradation. Despite the haunting beauty of the cinematography, which captures scenes of Auschwitz under bright skies, ethical questions about the aestheticization of historical tragedy emerge.
While the Jewish testimonies add depth to the film, the scenes at the modern-day Auschwitz Museum force the viewer to reflect on the film’s depiction of evil and its consequences. Zone of Interest challenges the viewer to confront the banality of evil against the backdrop of domestic tranquility, leaving a profound and disturbing impression.
