Top 10 Law Schools in the United States with Rankings and Insights

Employment of attorneys is expected to grow 8% over the next decade. However, many law school graduates face the challenge of finding jobs that justify the significant time and money they invested in their education.

The ranking of top law schools seeks to address this concern by assessing how successful an institution is in finding employment for its graduates. Nearly 60 percent of the ranking formula focuses on successful job placement, with the remainder of the criteria including academic indicators such as faculty resources, the success of incoming freshmen, and how law schools, lawyers, and judges rate the overall quality of the program.

A school’s overall ranking among the best law schools should be one of many factors when deciding where to apply. While these rankings reflect academic quality and graduation success rates (key considerations for prospective students), they don’t cover every important aspect. Personal factors, such as location, campus culture, the strength of specific programs, and the cost of tuition and financial aid, are also key to making an informed decision. Here is the full list:

In fall 2023 and early 2024, U.S. News surveyed nearly 200 ABA-approved law schools, of which 144 responded. Data from the schools’ annual ABA disclosures were also used. The rankings reflect data as of March 22, 2024, and are calculated using 10 ranking factors. Schools are scored, normalized, weighted and rescaled so the top schools receive 100 points and other schools receive a percentage of that score. This year, U.S. News placed more emphasis on outcomes and less on reputation and resources. The rankings also incorporate two years of bar exam and employment data and include additional attorney and judge evaluations.
