Turn red

Red is a 2022 animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Domee Shi and produced by Lindsey Collins, the film tells the story of Meilin “Mei” Lee, a 13-year-old girl from Toronto who experiences intense emotions due to a family curse and eventually transforms into a giant red panda.

Domee Shi, known for her short film Bao, created the film based on her own experiences growing up in Toronto. Development of the film began in May 2018, and it was inspired by anime, adding hand-drawn effects to Pixar’s usual 3D animation. Ludwig Göransson composed the score, and Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell wrote original songs.

The film was originally scheduled to be released in theaters worldwide, but plans changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film premiered in London, Toronto, and Los Angeles before being released on Disney+ on March 11, 2022. Despite this, the film was still a success in most countries, grossing over $20 million and receiving critical acclaim. The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 95th Academy Awards and is scheduled to be released in the United States on February 9, 2024.

Red Plot

In 2002, in Toronto, 13-year-old Meili hides her love for the boy band 4*Town from her strict mother Ming. One night, Ming embarrasses Meili in front of her crush, Devin, triggering a transformation: Meili transforms into a red panda when she’s emotionally overwhelmed. Her family reveals that this is a genetic trait that protects them, but it’s now dangerous to do so. Mei learns to control her transformation with the help of her friends.

Mei’s friends secretly help her raise money to buy concert tickets, but Mei’s mother forbids her to attend. Mei is confused about her identity until her father encourages her to accept her unique abilities. In a ritual to suppress her superpowers, Mei decides to keep them and attends the concert, where her mother is transformed into a giant red panda, causing chaos.

Mei confronts her mother, sparking an argument in which Ming is accidentally knocked unconscious. With the help of her family and friends, Mei reconciles with her mother and accepts her own path, deciding to remain a red panda. In the end, Mei and Ming repair their relationship, and Mei finds a balance between temple duties, spending time with friends, and embracing her unique abilities.
