Cyber commandos are specialized military units or teams focused on conducting cyber operations, including offensive and defensive strategies, to protect information systems from cyber threats.
The cyber commando concept is closely related to organizations such as the U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM) and similar initiatives in other countries aimed at enhancing national cybersecurity capabilities.

United States Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM)
The United States Cyber Command was established on May 21, 2010, and is one of the 11 joint commands of the U.S. Department of Defense. Its mission includes organizing, arranging, and executing operations to protect the Department of Defense information network and conducting a range of specific military cyber operations. This includes ensuring freedom of action in cyberspace for the United States and its allies while preventing adversaries from doing so.
Cyber National Mission Force (CNMF)
The Cyber National Mission Force (CNMF) is a key component of the U.S. Cyber Command and was formally established on January 27, 2014. Originally comprised of 21 teams, the CNMF has expanded to 39 joint cyber teams with more than 2,000 military personnel and civilians. The CNMF’s responsibilities include:
- National Mission Team (NMT): Focuses on defending the nation by identifying and countering adversary activities.
- Combat Mission Teams (CMTs): Conduct military cyberspace operations in support of combatant commanders’ priorities.
- Cyber Protection Team (CPT): Responsible for defending the Department of Defense’s information networks and preparing cyber forces for combat.
- National Support Team (NST): Provides analytical and planning support to the operations team.

CNMF participates in a variety of operations, including U.S. election defense, anti-ransomware operations, and global hunting operations designed to identify and mitigate malicious cyber activity around the world.
Global Cybersecurity Initiative
In addition to the US Cyber Command, other countries have also established cyber commands to combat cyber crime and improve airspace security. For example, the Indian Army has established the Command Cyber Operations and Support Wing (CCOSW), which is specifically designed to strengthen cyber security and protect military networks from cyber threats. These forces will play an important role in protecting communication networks and further enhancing security;
Further details of the project are as follows:-
- Project Name: Establishment of five new communications security units for the Indian Army
- Project cost: Rs 23.245 billion
- Project Location/Location: Indian Army
- The funding sought from Raksha Eigen Capital for the project is: Rs 232.45 crore
Other notable initiatives
Defense Cyber Agency (DCA): This tri-service agency based in India provides guidance and develops cyber doctrine, strategy and policy for the armed forces and coordinates with other national cybersecurity agencies.

National Cyber Security Co-ordinator (NCSC): Responsible for leading the national cyber security strategy and coordinating responses to cyber threats.
Cyber Swachhta Kendra: This is an online platform in India that aims to prevent and eliminate infected devices, create awareness among people and fight the malware problem.
The Importance of Cyber Commandos
These are all critical in today’s world where cyber impact issues are becoming increasingly prominent and complex. Ransomware attacks, phishing, and nation-state-sponsored cyber operations are some of the reasons why it is necessary to build the ability to fight back. Research from McAfee and CSIS shows that the global economy loses more than $1 trillion each year to cyber criminals, which emphasizes the need to protect the network.
As cyber threats continue to evolve, the role of cyber commandos and similar programs becomes increasingly important. These specialized forces not only defend against cyber attacks, but can proactively identify and eliminate threats before they can cause significant damage. The creation of organizations such as the U.S. Cyber Command and CCOSW demonstrates a growing recognition of the importance of cybersecurity in global defense strategies.
