This achievement, or rather misfortune, still stands as the most interceptions in a single game. While Hardy’s eight interceptions still stand as an overall record, in the Super Bowl era quarterbacks are grappling with a ton of interceptions in a game.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence recently faced a tough playoff debut, throwing four interceptions in the first half against the Los Angeles Chargers. Although it was a tough fight, it was still lower than the record set by Jim Hardy.

Most interceptions by a quarterback in a single game

Specific to the playoffs, the record for most interceptions in a single game is held by Brett Favre. Favre threw six interceptions against the St. Louis Rams in the 2002 NFC Divisional Round game for the Green Bay Packers.

The record, shared decades ago by Norm VanBrocklin, Bobby Layne and Frank Filchock, highlights the challenges quarterbacks face in maintaining the ball during crunch time in the playoffs.

In addition to recording six interceptions, the quarterback has thrown five interceptions 14 times in the NFL playoffs. Most recently, in 2021, Ben Roethlisberger threw four interceptions in the AFC Wild Card game against the Cleveland Browns. Each interception increases the pressure and difficulty of the game, and such records serve as proof of the intensity of competition in the NFL.

In NFL history, seven quarterbacks have thrown seven interceptions in a single game.
