What Lightsaber Color Would These 10 Marvel Superheroes Have In Star Wars?

Summary

  • The superheroes of Marvel wouldn’t all have the same color of lightsabers if they were in the Star Wars galaxy.
  • There are several different colors a lightsaber can be, and they all have different symbolism and origins that make them unique.
  • Multiple parts of Marvel’s superheroes, from their backstories and origins to their personalities and self-image, would factor into what color lightsaber they would wield.

If the superheroes of the Marvel universe ever found themselves in the Star Wars galaxy, they would need their own lightsabers with colors that matched their personalities. Lightsabers are one of the most iconic and fleshed-out parts of Star Wars, from the various lightsaber combat forms to the different types of lightsabers. They’re a legendary weapon, and it can be incredibly interesting to imagine them in the hands of Earth’s mightiest heroes: the superheroes of Marvel. Imagining the amazing feats those heroes would be capable of with a lightsaber is fun, but seeing what color their blade would be is just as intriguing.

There are quite a few lightsaber colors in Star Wars canon to choose from, and they all have subtly different meanings. While Star Wars has moved away from the meaning behind lightsaber colors in recent years, they still have some symbolism based on the most notable characters who used them. Some of the strongest Jedi in Star Wars had lightsaber colors that aren’t typically seen in the Star Wars movies, and the Marvel superheroes could have just as much variety in their weapons.

While there are common colored lightsabers in Star Wars lore, there is one color that has only been created three times in Star Wars canon.

10 Captain America: Blue

Close

Though having a vibranium shield and a lightsaber might be a bit of an unfair advantage, Captain America would do very well in the galaxy far, far away. If Cap did find himself in Star Wars, he would almost certainly have a blue lightsaber. Blue lightsabers are the most common color seen in Star Wars, but they also have a bit of symbolism around them. As such a common color, they’re almost representative of the Jedi Order as a whole, which is exactly the same role Captain America fills for the Avengers and many of the other superheroes in Marvel.

  • Captain America Face and Shield in Alex Ross Comic Cover Art Captain America

Initially debuting in 1940, Captain America is the patriotically themed superhero who has shared the title with only a few individuals. Beginning with Steve Rogers, Captain America’s birth resulted from a frail man taking part in an experimental U.S. Army super-soldier trial, which imbued him with super-human abilities. The character is often depicted wielding a nigh unbreakable and aerodynamic shield made of vibranium that they use to defend and attack their foes.

  • Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan in Obi Wan Kenobi TV show Obi-Wan Kenobi

The Padawan of Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi became a Jedi Knight after his master’s death. Obi-Wan trained Anakin Skywalker as a Jedi, with his own apprentice knighted after the Battle of Geonosis. The Jedi Master became a key player in the Jedi during the Clone Wars, and was heartbroken when Anakin turned to the dark side; Obi-Wan critically wounded Anakin before taking to the shadows, watching over the young Luke and Leia for years. He sacrificed himself for his two charges, becoming a Force Ghost and continuing to mentor them.

Aside from representing the Jedi Order, blue lightsabers also stand for bravery, courage, and righteousness. All of those attributes fit perfectly for Cap, as they’re essentially the foundation of his entire character. Captain America is far from the strongest superhero in Marvel comics, but he still puts himself at the forefront of whatever fight he needs to be a part of. He’s a symbol of doing the right thing just because it’s the right thing to do, and a blue lightsaber would fit him perfectly.

9 Deadpool: Purple

Close

Deadpool is quite a few things all at once, and he would need a lightsaber color to reflect his multi-faceted personality. Only one lightsaber color is as unique as Deadpool himself: purple. Only a handful of Jedi used purple lightsabers, and only a handful of characters can compare to Deadpool. On top of that, in Star Wars Legends, purple lightsabers were meant to represent a combination of the light and dark sides of the Force, and a Jedi who balanced both. Deadpool is one of Marvel’s most prominent anti-heroes, and his constant struggle between his own selfish urges and his better nature would be perfectly reflected in a purple lightsaber.

  • Samuel L Jackson As Mace Windu in Star Wars Mace Windu

One of the most prominent Jedi during the prequel era, Mace Windu served as a crucial member of the Jedi Council, considered second only to Yoda himself. Windu was a remarkable figure among the Jedi, having turned his own temptation toward the dark side to his advantage, even creating a new lightsaber form known as Vaapad. Mace ultimately failed in his mission to protect the Jedi, apparently killed by Palpatine and Anakin Skywalker at the end of the Clone Wars.

There’s another, arguably more important, reason Deadpool would probably have a purple lightsaber in Star Wars. Deadpool is notorious for his ability to break the fourth wall and his knowledge of real-world events and pop culture. The first purple lightsaber in Star Wars rather famously came into being when Samuel L. Jackson asked George Lucas if his blade could be purple instead of blue or green. Deadpool almost certainly knows about this real-world moment, and he’s exactly the type of character who would ask the writers for a purple lightsaber for no other reason than to stand out.

8 Wolverine: Orange

Close

If Wolverine found himself in the galaxy far, far away, he would probably pick an orange lightsaber for himself. Orange lightsabers are a relatively new addition to Star Wars canon, though they have a longer history in Legends. In canon, they were most notably used by Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati, the villains of Ahsoka. Their orange lightsabers illustrated that they didn’t fit into the binary split between the Jedi and the Sith, that they were somewhere between the two in terms of morality. Wolverine would almost surely sympathize with that feeling of being in between, and an orange lightsaber would help him show that.

Throughout most of his history, Wolverine has viewed himself as a loner who doesn’t exactly fit as either a hero or a villain. Despite his near-constant heroics, Logan still sees himself as an anti-hero on the fringes of the X-Men. His own view of himself would probably cause Logan to pick an orange lightsaber: it would represent the way he sees himself as close to the dark side. Kyber crystals often respond to the minds of the person they bond to, as well, so Wolverine’s self-image could be just as important as his actual role as a superhero.

7 Spider-Man: Blue

Close

Like Captain America, Spider-Man’s hypothetical lightsaber would almost certainly be blue. Spider-Man has all the same qualities of Cap, like courage, determination, righteousness, and a strong sense of responsibility. He would be a perfect representative of the entire Jedi Order and a symbol of what it means to serve the light side of the Force. Blue lightsabers carry quite a bit of responsibility for their wielders. Spider-Man is, at his core, a character who is entirely about responsibility. Whether it’s Peter Parker, Miles Morales, or any other Spider-person, they are all committed to using their power for the greater good, no matter the personal cost.

  • Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker in Star Wars the Rise of Skywalker Rey Skywalker

Daughter of a “failed” Palpatine clone, Rey became part of a mysterious phenomenon known as the Force Dyad – a vergence in the Force that bound her to Kylo Ren. Trained by both Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, Rey fought against the First Order as an ally of the Resistance. She ultimately triumphed against Palpatine himself, channelling the full power of all Jedi.

Created By J.J. Abrams , Lawrence Kasdan , Michael Arndt First Appearance Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens Alliance Jedi Franchise Star Wars

Spider-Man also has quite a few similarities to some of the most prominent blue lightsaber users in Star Wars. Many of the Jedi known for using blue lightsabers, like Rey and Luke Skywalker, used their blue blades when they were young and at the beginning of their journeys to become heroes. So many of Spider-Man’s stories focus on how he learned to accept his power at such a young age, and how he had to become a hero even against insurmountable odds. If Spider-Man had a blue lightsaber, he would be in the company of several Star Wars characters who understand what he’s been through.

6 Doctor Strange: Yellow

Close

Doctor Strange has always had a flair for the dramatic, and he would almost certainly have had a yellow lightsaber to stand out from the rest of the crowd. Yellow lightsabers are an increasingly common oddity in Star Wars with a fair bit of symbolism surrounding them. Originally, they were reserved for the Jedi Temple guards, stalwart defenders of the Jedi Order’s most important hub. This mirrors Doctor Strange’s role in Marvel: as the Sorcerer Supreme, he was the guardian of the Sanctum Sanctorum and the multiverse as a whole, much like a Temple guard.

Rey was the first live-action character to wield a yellow lightsaber in Star Wars, but others have used the same color in canon and Legends.

Star Wars Legends makes it even clearer that Doctor Strange would have a yellow lightsaber. In Legends, Jedi Sentinels used yellow lightsabers. Sentinels made their blades by purifying a red kyber crystal, and it signified that the Sentinel was very pious. Much of Doctor Strange’s backstory involved him learning to have faith in the things he didn’t understand as a scientist, and that faith has become an integral part of his character. While yellow lightsabers don’t necessarily symbolize that anymore, it would still apply to Strange.

5 Black Widow: White

Close

In many ways, Black Widow would fit perfectly into the galaxy of Star Wars, mainly because she’s a shining example of one of the franchise’s favorite stories: redemption. Natasha Romanoff began as a ruthless assassin in the Black Widow program, and she committed more than her fair share of atrocities. Later in her life, however, Natasha defected to S.H.I.E.L.D and became a superhero, setting her past life behind her and turning towards the good. For this reason, Black Widow would almost certainly have a white lightsaber in Star Wars.

  • Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano in Ahsoka Ahsoka Tano

The apprentice of Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano was an accomplished Padawan who served during the Clone Wars. Ahsoka left the Jedi after she became disillusioned with the Jedi Council, but returned to serve in the Siege of Mandalore at the end of the Clone Wars. She survived Order 66, becoming a Rebel agent during the Dark Times of the Empire’s reign, and her adventures continue in the New Republic era. Ahsoka was last seen stranded in a distant galaxy, having failed to prevent Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return.

White lightsabers are perhaps the most symbolically significant color in all of Star Wars. They’re created when a Jedi or Force-sensitive person purifies a red kyber crystal, one that had undergone lightsaber bleeding by a dark side user. Ahsoka Tano is the most prominent example of this, as she purified the Sixth Brother’s red crystals and used them as her own. Black Widow basically already did this: she purified herself by giving up her old ways and becoming a superhero. A white lightsaber would perfectly symbolize her backstory and her journey from assassin to Avenger.

4 Daredevil: Orange

Close

Like Wolverine, Daredevil’s self-image would be an extremely important factor in determining the color of his lightsaber. Also, like Wolverine, Daredevil would almost certainly have an orange lightsaber. A major part of Matt Murdock’s characterization in the history of Marvel has been how he reconciles his alter ego and the brutal beatings he deals out with his own sense of justice. In many ways, Daredevil sees himself as a devil, one that sacrifices his own morality to punish the wicked. That self loathing would certainly influence his kyber crystal, and Daredevil would likely have an orange lightsaber.

Star Wars features a wide array of lightsaber colors each with different meanings. What do orange lightsabers signify, and who has used one in canon?

An orange lightsaber would also reflect more than just Daredevil’s self-image. Matt Murdock, like many other superheroes, led a double life. His was more than that, though, as he found himself on both sides of the law: a lawyer by day and an enforcer by night. Daredevil didn’t quite fit into either group perfectly, in much the same way Shin Hati and Baylan Skoll didn’t fit into either the Jedi or the Sith. An orange lightsaber would show that Matt Murdock worked for both the light and the dark, but that he ultimately still wasn’t fully on the dark side.

3 Storm: Green

Close

Storm is, arguably, one of the most classically heroic members of the X-Men ever. As a natural leader, a true believer in justice, and a mentor to the mutants who joined after her, Storm would likely have a green lightsaber if she were in Star Wars. Green lightsabers are the second most common lightsaber color, but they still have a bit of symbolism attached to them, mainly because of Luke Skywalker’s transformation in Return of the Jedi. Jedi who used green lightsabers were generally committed to the ideals of compassion, cooperation, and goodness, all of which fit Storm perfectly.

Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi. Related Star Wars: How & When Luke Skywalker Made His Green Lightsaber (In Canon)

Star Wars gave Luke Skywalker a new, green lightsaber in Return of the Jedi, but the movie failed to explain just when and how he made the weapon.

There’s an even stronger link between Storm and green lightsabers in Star Wars Legends. In that continuity, Jedi Consulars used green lightsabers, and they were known for using the Force in favor of their lightsabers. While it’s not a direct translation, Storm’s very powers – her control over weather patterns – feels just as magical and wise as a Jedi’s use of the Force. Storm’s powers also give her quite a bit of empathy for other living beings, something that the light side users of the Force are known for.

2 Iron Man: White

Close

Like Black Widow, Iron Man is one of Marvel’s most well-known redemption stories, which makes him a great fit for a white lightsaber. Tony Stark began his history in Marvel as an apathetic business person with a loose sense of morality. He sold guns and other weapons of war to the highest bidder, and it was only after he realized the error of his ways that he became a hero. Iron Man had to purify himself to become the superhero he now is, which is very similar to the way white lightsabers come from purified red kyber crystals.

The people who used white lightsabers often tended to go their own way: Orla Jareni was a Jedi Wayseeker, while Ahsoka Tano left the Jedi Order entirely. Tony Stark was no different. Like white lightsaber users, Iron Man carved his own path, even if that path often led him to being a leader. He didn’t let anything, from the Sokovia Accords and half the Avengers to Thanos himself, stop him from doing what he felt was right. Because of Iron Man’s stubbornness and commitment to his own sense of morality, he’s already earned a white lightsaber.

1 Hulk: Green

Close

Aside from his gamma-radiated skin, a green lightsaber isn’t the most obvious choice for the Incredible Hulk. Bruce Banner had to constantly fight his darker, angrier urges to prevent the Hulk from going on a rampage. He also used the Hulk’s rage to do good, which may seem like he would be the perfect representation of an orange or purple lightsaber. The Hulk, however, would more likely use a green lightsaber precisely because of how he learned to balance his more primal impulses.

Yoda exiled himself to Dagobah, where he learned how to become a Force Ghost and offered guidance to Luke Skywalker.

Purple and orange lightsaber users were known for using their negative emotions to serve the light. Much of Bruce Banner’s character development, however, wasn’t spent harnessing his anger, but rather on transforming it into something more productive. Over time, Bruce learned to master his rage, even becoming Professor Hulk in the MCU, and eliminating his reliance on anger. That’s exactly the type of spiritual discipline that green lightsaber users like Yoda were known for, and the reason why Hulk deserves a green blade of his own, if the Marvel superheroes ever found themselves in Star Wars.
