Prior to the Chennai Test, Mahmood had picked up an impressive 14 wickets in three Test matches at an average of 25. In limited-overs cricket, he has taken 30 wickets in ODIs and 18 in T20Is. Mahmood emerged from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) age-group system and joined the Chittagong Under-16 team in 2015 from Lakshmipur in the Chittagong division.
