General Hospital

General Hospital (commonly referred to as GH) is an American soap opera that first aired on April 1, 1963, making it the longest-running American soap opera. It is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records and holds the record for winning the most Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series, with 14 wins. The show was created by Frank and Doris Hursley and was originally set in an unnamed fictional city within the hospital. In the 1970s, it became Port Charles, New York.

This soap opera is an important part of ABC television history and is produced by The Prospect Studios in Hollywood. It started out as a half-hour show, was extended to 45 minutes in 1976, and finally became a full hour in 1978. The Quartmaine and Spencer families have been at the heart of the storyline since the late 1970s.

General Hospital reached the height of its popularity in the early 1980s, thanks in part to the iconic “super couple” Luke and Laura, whose 1981 wedding attracted a staggering 30 million viewers, setting a record for the highest-rated hour in American soap opera history.

Over the years, the show has featured guest appearances from such notable stars as Roseanne Barr, James Franco and Elizabeth Taylor. In 2007, General Hospital was named one of Time magazine’s “100 Best Television Shows of All Time.” In 2009, the show was converted to high-definition television, becoming the first ABC soap opera to do so.

As of 2012, it remains the only soap opera on ABC after All My Children and One Life to Live were canceled. General Hospital celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013 and aired its 15,000th episode on June 22, 2022, continuing to be an important and enduring part of American television history.
