General Hospital

General Hospital, often abbreviated as GH, is the longest-running soap opera in the United States, recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as an American soap opera. The show premiered on April 1, 1963 on ABC, and is the third longest-running scripted drama series still in production in the world. The soap was created by Frank and Doris Hursley and originally took place in an unnamed city hospital, which later became Port Charles, New York.

The show’s enduring success led to the launch of spinoffs Port Charles and General Hospital: Night Shift. Over the years, the show has grown from a half-hour show to a full hour. Notably, General Hospital’s storylines have primarily focused on the Quartermaine and Spencer families since the late 1970s.

The soap became a huge hit in the early 1980s thanks to iconic “super couple” Luke and Laura, whose 1981 wedding remains the most-watched hour in American soap history. The soap gained acclaim for its celebrity guest appearances and critical acclaim, and was converted to high-definition television in 2009.

As of 2010, it became the oldest soap opera in the United States, and became the last ABC soap opera after 2012. General Hospital celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013 and aired its 15,000th episode in 2022, continuing its historic run.
