Starring Kate Winslet, Mackenzie Foy, Claire Forlani, Iain Glen and Fern Deacon, the film is the sixth film adaptation of Sewell’s novel. It introduces a unique twist by depicting Black Beauty as a mare, unlike the horse in the original story, which was a gelding. The storyline unfolds as Black Beauty arrives at Birtwick Park, forming a strong bond with an energetic teenager, leading to various chapters, challenges and adventures.
The film was originally planned for a theatrical release, but challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic prompted its distribution rights to be acquired by Walt Disney Pictures. It finally premiered on Disney+ on November 27, 2020. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film gave audiences a touching story. However, it was unexpectedly removed from Disney+ on May 26, 2023, as part of Disney’s cost-cutting measures and re-evaluation of its content strategy.

Disney+ recently removed the 2020 film “Black Beauty” from its platform as part of cost-cutting measures and a broader review of content strategy. Starring Mackenzie Foy, the film is based on Anna Sewell’s 1877 novel and depicts the enduring bond between a horse and a teenager facing life’s challenges. Despite mixed reviews, the emotional storyline failed to find a place in Disney+’s growing content lineup.
This deletion is not an isolated incident; other titles including Big Shot, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, and The World According to Jeff Goldblum have also been axed. Since these are Disney+ originals, there is little chance they will appear on other platforms unless released via an alternative format such as digital, DVD, or Blu-ray.
Existing information suggests more content purges may be in the works as Disney+ re-evaluates its vast library. Given the uncertainty surrounding the durability of these removals, fans are advised to watch their favorite titles on Disney+ immediately. The company’s move is seen as a strategic move to optimize its content offerings and effectively manage costs in a highly competitive streaming environment.
