With Beetlejuice 3 Officially Happening, I Really Hope The Upcoming Sequel Features These 8 Characters

A third Beetlejuice movie is officially happening, and I really hope it will bring back these eight characters. In 1988, Tim Burton introduced the world to bio-exorcist Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) in the movie of the same name. Beetlejuice was a critical and commercial success, and it showed the audience the type of stories Burton likes to do, as well as his unique visual style. Despite Beetlejuice’s success, it took over 30 years for it to get a sequel, appropriately titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, with Burton back as director and Keaton reprising his role as the chaotic title ghost.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice reunites viewers with Lydia (Winona Ryder) and Delia Deetz (Catherine O’Hara), who return to Winter River for the funeral of Charles Deetz. Accompanying them is Lydia’s estranged daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega), who soon gets into trouble in the Neitherworld. With no other option left, Lydia summons Beetlejuice for help, who agrees, but at a big price. Now, thanks to the huge success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a third movie has been confirmed to be in development, and though plot details are currently unknown, I hope it brings back these eight characters.

Father Damien

Among the new characters introduced in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is Father Damien, played by Burn Gorman. Father Damien led Charles Deetz’s funeral and later Lydia and Rory’s (Justin Theroux) almost-wedding, which was crashed by Beetlejuice before it could even start. The bio-exorcist seized Father Damien’s presence and kept him around to preside over his wedding to Lydia, making him part of the hilarious “MacArthur Park” musical scene. Although Father Damien has very little screen time, Gorman’s comedic skills made him unforgettable.

Father Damien is one of those minor characters who, despite their limited screen time, leave a big impression due to the actor’s comedic skills, timing, and the character itself. One of the things that caught my attention about Father Damien and intrigued me was that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hinted at him having an alcohol problem. While this was added for laughs, it would be interesting to learn more about Father Damien, his views on the afterlife, and the chaotic wedding he almost presided over.

Beetlejuice’s Shrunken Head Crew

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Introduced His Crew Of Shrunken-Headed Employees

Close

Another fun addition to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was Betelgeuse’s team of shrunken-headed characters. In the first movie, shrunken-headed people were casually seen throughout the movie, and at the very end, Beetlejuice himself became one when he tricked a witch doctor and stole his number ticket. The witch doctor then shrunk Beetlejuice’s head, but the ghost eventually reverted to normal. In the sequel, Beetlejuice was revealed to now be managing an afterlife call center, with all his employees being shrunken-headed people.

It would be expected that, after Beetlejuice’s return to the Neitherworld, he would go back to work and reunite his team of shrunken-headed employees.

The most notable employee was Bob, who was very loyal to Beetlejuice, so much so that he disguised himself as his boss to trick Wolf Jackson (Willem Dafoe) and Delores (Monica Bellucci), Beetlejuice’s vengeful witch ex-wife. It would be expected that, after Beetlejuice’s return to the Neitherworld, he would go back to work and reunite his team of shrunken-headed employees, who, as the second movie showed, have a lot of potential for some funny moments.

Bob was killed by Delores in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and he was loyal to his boss until the very end. R.I.P. Bob.

Lydia’s Mother

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Confirmed She’s Alive

Delia and Lydia Deetz in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice made the big reveal that Lydia’s mother is alive, but for some reason, there doesn’t seem to be a relationship between her and Lydia.

Beetlejuice introduced the Deetzes, formed by Charles, his wife Delia, and his daughter Lydia. There was no mention of Lydia’s mother in the first movie, so it was assumed that she had passed away. However, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice made the big reveal that Lydia’s mother is alive, but for some reason, there doesn’t seem to be a relationship between her and Lydia, otherwise she probably would have attended Charles’ funeral or Astrid would have mentioned her.

With both Delia and Charles now gone as they boarded the Soul Train at the end of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the third movie could easily introduce Lydia’s mother. Both movies so far have touched on the topic of family, to different extents, so the presence of Lydia’s mother would be fitting. At the same time, it could add a layer of conflict, while exploring her dynamic with both Lydia and Astrid.

Richard

Richard Was Played by Santiago Cabrera

Close

The reason why Astrid and Lydia’s relationship was broken was the death of Richard, Astrid’s father. Richard was in Brazil, fighting for climate justice, when he died in a boating accident. His body was never found, and Lydia was unable to communicate with him, which led to Astrid’s resentment. However, when Astrid was tricked by Jeremy and taken to the Neitherworld, she came across her father, who now works there as an immigration officer. Richard saved Lydia and Astrid, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice gave them a one-of-a-kind family reunion.

Richard was shown with piranhas all over his body, suggesting that was his cause of death. Of course, Richard stayed in the Neitherworld while Astrid and Lydia returned to the land of the living. Beetlejuice 3 could see Astrid and/or Lydia visiting Richard again or him somehow making his way into the land of the living.

4

Wolf Jackson

Wolf Jackson Was Played By Willem Dafoe

Close

One of the most notable new characters in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is definitely Willem Dafoe’s Wolf Jackson. Jackson is a detective in the Neitherworld who was a B-movie action star in life before being killed by a live grenade. In the afterlife, Jackson continues to act (and react) like an action star, which gives him a special charm. Jackson was in charge of finding Delores when she resurfaced and went on a killing spree, but this was later interrupted by the presence of Lydia and Astrid in the afterlife, so he also had to go after them and Beetlejuice.

I Would Gladly Watch A Beetlejuice Spinoff Dedicated To This Scene-Stealing Sequel Character

If the world of Beetlejuice expanded with a spinoff, there’s one character from the sequel I would love to see leading a movie or TV show.

Jackson followed them into the world of the living and interrupted Beetlejuice and Lydia’s wedding ceremony. However, Beetlejuice froze him and his team, and they stayed that way through the whole “MacArthur Park” musical number. At the end of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Jackson escorted Delia back to the afterlife. Jackson has a lot of potential, with Dafoe’s comedic skills shining through, and it would be very fun to have him back, either going after Beetlejuice again or serving as an ally.

3

Astrid

Astrid Was Played By Jenna Ortega

The biggest addition to the main cast of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is Astrid, Lydia’s daughter. Astrid had an estranged relationship with her mother and her grandparents, triggered by the death of her father and Lydia’s inability to communicate with him. Astrid was brought to Winter River for her grandfather’s funeral, and she found a connection and comfort with Jeremy, who was later revealed to be a ghost and tricked her into exchanging her life for his afterlife. This was the event that led Lydia to summon Beetlejuice, but it also brought mother and daughter together.

It’s implied that they are now on much better terms than at the beginning of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, so it’s expected that the third movie will continue to explore their relationship.

At the end of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Lydia and Astrid went on a long-planned trip together, in which they mended their relationship. It’s implied that they are now on much better terms than at the beginning of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, so it’s expected that the third movie will continue to explore their relationship, more so as this time they would have to face trouble as a much healthier and closer mother/daughter pair.

2

Lydia

Lydia Was Played By Winona Ryder

There can’t be a Beetlejuice movie without Lydia Deetz. In both Beetlejuice movies, Lydia has been the one to bring the bio-exorcist into the human world, leading him to unleash his unique type of chaos. In the first movie, Lydia did so to help her friends, Adam and Barbara Maitland, but in return, Beetlejuice wanted to marry Lydia so he could freely cross into the land of the living. In the sequel, she summoned Beetlejuice to help her rescue Astrid (alive, of course) from the Neitherworld, also in exchange for marrying him.

Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis’ Adam and Barbara Maitland are absent from Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but where exactly did their ghosts go?

At the end of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Lydia had a nightmare of Astrid marrying a guy she met in Transylvania and later giving birth to the nightmarish Beetlejuice baby. When Lydia woke up, she was still dreaming, as Beetlejuice was lying next to her. Lydia finally woke up and found herself alone, but this proved she still had a strong connection to the ghost. Of course, this perfectly sets up Beetlejuice 3, so Lydia must return for it.

Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Was Played By Michael Keaton

Of course, a third Beetlejuice movie needs to bring the title ghost back. It’s Beetlejuice who brings the chaos and fun to these movies, as he doesn’t really care about crossing boundaries when it comes to scaring the living and messing with the dead. In the first movie, he was all about scaring the Deetzes in exchange for Lydia marrying him, all so he could bring his chaotic ways into the land of the living. In the sequel, he was a lot busier, as he was not only managing his business but also hiding from Delores and haunting Lydia until she finally summoned him again.

It’s going to be fun to learn what Beetlejuice is up to now in the Neitherworld, as well as why he could be summoned again and for what price.

The last time the audience saw Beetlejuice (and before Lydia’s nightmares), he exploded when his name was said three times, so it’s unclear what happened to him and where he is. It’s assumed he was sent back into the Neitherworld, but it’s unknown if he went back into his old life at the afterlife call center or if he’s now doing something different. It’s going to be fun to learn what Beetlejuice is up to now in the Neitherworld, as well as why he could be summoned again and for what price.
