6 Best Tom Hanks Movies Streaming On Disney+

As one of the most prolific actors alive today, Tom Hanks has some great available on multiple streaming platforms. That said, Disney+ arguably boasts the best selection of Hanks’ movies out there to stream right now. Thanks to their purchase of 20th Century Fox in 2019, Disney holds the rights to stream some of the best live-action films Tom Hanks has ever made, as well as a beloved animated franchise in which he voices the lead role.

It’s not just that Fox produced every movie starring Hanks being streamed on Disney+. The Walt Disney Company’s own Touchstone Pictures and Pixar Studios produced most of the Tom Hanks films available on Disney’s streaming service after all. But the two late additions to Disney’s catalogue via 20th Century Fox broaden the horizons of Hanks fans subscribed to Disney+. There are police and coming-of-age comedies, crime dramas, a family-themed biopic, a toy-themed tetralogy, and Hanks’ two breakout big-screen roles. All in all, Disney+ offers at least one very different Tom Hanks feature for every day of the week.

Although Turner & Hooch has largely been forgotten in the years since it proved to be a happy-go-lucky box office hit, this ‘80s buddy cop comedy movie is bound to be a winner with the whole family. Hanks plays uptight neat-freak and police detective Scott Turner, who’s obliged to take in an adorably droopy-eyed dog called Hooch, who’s recovered at a crime scene.

Hooch – whose breed is a Bordeaux mastiff, in case any aspiring pet owners were wondering – proceeds to make a mess of every investigation that Turner is working on. While the movie isn’t particularly original and doesn’t offer up many belly laughs, it’s hard not to chuckle throughout at this sweet-natured pooch winning over its reluctant owner. Hooch isn’t too bad at solving crimes, either, as it turns out.

Saving Mr. Banks marked the beginning of Hanks’ biographical movie decade, along with his portrayal of Richard Phillips in the hostage film Captain Phillips. Here, he plays none other than Disney founder Walt Disney, who’s desperate to buy the movie rights for his daughter’s favorite storybook character, Mary Poppins.

Saving Mr. Banks is actually a well-executed and brilliantly acted piece of work that goes deeper into the psyche of an author than most more adult-centric literary biopics dare to do.

Despite its premise seemingly having limited traction for riveting feature-length plotlines, Saving Mr. Banks is actually a well-executed and brilliantly acted piece of work that goes deeper into the psyche of an author than most more adult-centric literary biopics dare to do. Emma Thompson is in top form as protagonist P.L. Travers, and fans of Mary Poppins will enjoy the movie for its reconstruction of the Sherman Brothers’ songwriting sessions as much for its exploration of Travers’ troubled childhood.

Sam Mendes’ crime movie Road to Perdition sees Tom Hanks in perhaps his grittiest ever role as mafia enforcer Michael Sullivan. The actor handles his part with surprising ease, dispelling any questions about his suitability for the role while bringing his own touches of humanity and warmth to the character.

Hanks’ work in Road to Perdition is a masterclass in building layers and creating depth beneath a character’s hard exterior.

Hanks might be one of the most likable character actors in Hollywood, but his portrayals are rarely, if ever, one-dimensional, and his work in Road to Perdition is a masterclass in building layers and creating depth beneath a character’s hard exterior. What’s more, Tyler Hoechlin puts in a worthy performance as Sullivan’s son Michael Jr., holding his own opposite Hanks as the two actors pull off a compelling depiction of father-son tensions in the context of organized crime.

In 1984, Tom Hanks first announced himself to the world as a movie star. Splash cast Hanks opposite Daryl Hannah as a man who falls in love with a mermaid. The actor charms his way through Ron Howard’s light and frothy comedy, at once embodying the ordinary and the heroic in a way only he can.

The film might not have made Hanks big (that came four years later), but it certainly put him on the map. This entry is actually four entries in one, but viewers can take their pick from any of Pixar’s quintessential quartet of computer-animated classics. Otherwise, half of this list would be dominated by the Toy Story movies. From Sheriff Woody’s initial rivalry with the new toy on the block, Buzz Lightyear, to his near-miss with a flight to Japan, and the whole gang’s donation to a daycare center before they find a new owner, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Aside from the clever meta gags, game-changing animation, ingenious set-pieces, and tearjerking songs, Hanks’ voice work as Woody in the Toy Story franchise is some of the finest acting of his career. Alongside the likes of Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, and Don Rickles, he sounds like he’s having the time of his life, too.

Any one of the Toy Story movies could sit at the top of this list and fully deserve it. But Tom Hanks’ first career-defining movie, Big, just pips them all to the post. Big sounds like a strange, sentimental, and somewhat outdated idea for a movie on paper, and yet Hanks’ performance as a 13-year-old kid in a man’s body makes it one of the most joyous, poignant, and brilliantly relatable movies of the 1980s.
