Busch Stadium is a large baseball stadium in St. Louis, Missouri, where the St. Louis Cardinals play. It is also known as the new Busch Stadium or Busch Stadium III. The stadium has a capacity of approximately 44,383 people and has special seating for approximately 3,706 fans, as well as 61 luxury suites. It’s built on the site of the old Busch Memorial Stadium and has a cool shopping and entertainment district next to it called Ballpark Village.
The game opened on April 4, 2006, with a practice game between the Cardinals, Memphis Redbirds and Springfield Cardinals. The actual first game was on April 10, 2006, when the Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers on an Albert Pujols home run.
As early as 2004, Anheuser-Busch President August Busch IV stated that they purchased the naming rights for 20 years. Team owner William DeWitt Jr. wanted to keep the name “Busch Stadium” as a tribute to the fans and the city of St. Louis.
The stadium is the third stadium in St. Louis to be called Busch Stadium. The first was named Athletes Park, which was changed to Busch Stadium in 1953. Then-owner August Busch Jr. wanted to name it Budweiser Stadium, but rules did not allow naming it after an alcoholic beverage. So he named it Busch Stadium after himself, and the company later produced Busch Beer.
