In Story Mode, the food supply in the Formicarium is extremely limited. You cannot get food unless you advance to another stage of the story. You can complete stages 1.1 or 1.2 to play a separate instance of the game and complete the objectives. In this separate stage, the map, resources, and enemies are fixed, so there is a way to get food.

Use worker ants to excavate different areas marked with green exclamation marks. These green exclamation marks indicate food resources or passive enemies that you can eliminate to get food. Usually, some of these areas have red markings, these are hostile mobs that you will have to fight once you open a path to them. These hostile mobs also provide food when you eliminate them, but it all depends on how you deal with the enemies.
After winning a stage, you will receive three rewards: Territory, Food, and Royal Jelly. These rewards are transferred to your Hive, which is your main colony. This is also the main way to obtain food and grow your Hive. You can choose which of the three rewards you want, but you will still receive all three regardless.
In Challenge Mode you will get more resources, so you should always choose Challenge Mode if you want food to feed your nest and get some extra Royal Jelly for upgrades. Challenge Mode becomes available after you complete a specific stage and run it again.

Since you compete with your enemies for food, you will also lose some resources if most of the ants in your colony die. When your ants die, your eggs will automatically hatch new ants, and they need food to hatch. So, if you fight a powerful creature and lose nearly 50+ ants, you will need 100+ foods to replenish your colony.
If you have the “Always look for food” option turned on, food will always be handled by the queen ant. This option is turned on by default next to your ant colony. As long as your worker ants have access to the food source location, they will constantly get all the food. With the extra food, you can expand your colony by hatching new ants.
