How to Get Iron Ores in Pax Dei

The hardest hurdle to overcome in Pax Dei is getting from the early game into the mid-game. You’ll start to see some iron resource requirements like iron bars, iron ingots, etc., but you won’t know where to find them. Getting iron ore can be difficult, but here’s how you can get them in Pax Dei.

Where to find iron ore in Pax Dei

Pax Dei Iron Ore Deposit

Iron Ore is obtained by mining iron ores with a pickaxe. Some iron ores require a better pickaxe to mine, and they are divided into impure iron ores, normal iron ores, and pure iron ores. Since the most basic pickaxe can only mine impure iron ores, you will need to specifically look for impure iron ores. Impure iron ores are found around mountainous areas.

Open the map and look for the grey area with lots of mountains in the image above. This map is in the Shire starting area, but you can also see other mountains from other starting areas. If you have trouble finding impure iron deposits, you should look in different locations. There are a mixture of gneiss deposits, granite deposits, and impure iron deposits.

Once you see an area with multiple impure iron deposits, mark it with a waypoint so you can remember where the impure iron deposits are. These deposits are fixed, so you can always come back when you need more. They also spawn in groups of two or three impure iron deposits. You can also get some sand while farming some gneiss deposits.

What is iron ore used for?

Iron ingots in the furnace Pax Dei

Use a furnace to smelt iron ore to create iron ingots. You’ll need 40 impure iron ore and 80 charcoal to make 20 iron ingots. That’s a lot of resources. It also takes an hour per crafting, so you really need to prioritize crafting this resource unless you’re willing to build two furnaces to speed things up.

You can also exit the game and then continue crafting at the Furnace. This applies to all buildings, so if you need charcoal from a Charcoal Kiln, you should queue up that for charcoal crafting as well.

Another tip is that after you get your first iron ingot, you still need to upgrade your smithing skill. The trick is to focus on crafting anything that will unlock other recipes that require iron ingots. You will continually unlock new recipes with other iron recipes like iron bars, iron nails, iron wire, and iron sheets. Focus on crafting recipes that are on “yellow” or easy difficulty. Once recipes turn green or “easy”, they will provide almost no smithing experience points.

Once you’ve leveled up your Blacksmithing skill, you should prioritize iron tools, such as an iron pickaxe or an iron chopping axe.

While waiting for the iron ingot to be crafted, you can gather some sapwood. If you don’t have enough sapwood, don’t craft planks or nails unless you have a large stockpile. The charcoal requirement for the iron ingot consumes a lot of sapwood.
