How to Play Free Mode in Empires of the Undergrowth

Empires of the Undergrowth is a hidden RTS gem that everyone needs to know about. This game came out a few years ago and was primarily focused on the story mode. However, there is a way to get a free-flowing endless game by setting up a free play run. Here is a quick guide on how to set up and play the free mode option in Empires of the Undergrowth.

How to start free play in Empires of the Undergrowth

After launching the game you will see the main menu with the “Play” button in the upper left corner of the screen. Pressing Play will take you through the Tutorial, Story, Custom Games, or Arcade. Going to Custom Games it will take you to another menu.

There are two custom game modes: Skirmish and Free Play. Skirmish is technically similar to Free Play, but you fight against other colonies that you have built.

In the Free Play tab, you will get a few more options here. You can choose from different game types, including Conquest, which is basically the skirmish game mode. Here is a list of all the game types and their win conditions:

  • Conquer – Defeat all other colonies.
  • Domination – Get the highest score by defeating enemies.
  • Survive – Survive until the timer runs out.
  • Besieged – Survive the endless onslaught of enemies. After round 6, you will no longer be able to get food.
  • Hunter – Defeat a certain number of super creatures.
  • Biomass – Grow your colony to a specific size.
  • Creativity – Everything is free. You can’t be attacked.

In these game types, you can also set the metrics for each victory condition under the “Victory Condition Settings” tab. In addition to the numerical settings, you can also filter the environmental creature selection, level settings, and difficulty of AI colonies and environmental enemies.

If you’re after a complete free-play experience, you can opt for creative mode and build whatever you want.
