National Voters Day 2024: When is National Voters Day celebrated?

National Voter’s Day is celebrated on January 25, commemorating the founding day of the Election Commission of India.

National Voters Day History

January 25 is the founding day of the Election Commission of India (ECI), which was established in 1950. The day was first celebrated in 2011 to encourage young voters to participate in the electoral process. There is no doubt that this is a day to celebrate voting rights and Indian democracy. The main goal of the Electoral Commission is to increase the registration of voters, especially those who are eligible.

Let us tell you that earlier the eligibility age for voters was 21 years but it was lowered to 18 years in 1988. The 61st Amendment in 1998 lowered the age of eligibility to vote in India.

The significance of National Voters Day

Why do we celebrate National Voters Day?

This year, the National Award 2022 will be presented by Draupadi Murmu, President of India. National Awards for Best Electoral Practices 2023-24 will be awarded to state and district level officials to mark the occasion. The award recognizes their outstanding performance in elections in various areas including IT initiatives, security management, election administration, accessible elections and contribution to the field of voter awareness and advocacy. The awards will also be presented to key stakeholders such as government departments, ECI icons and media groups in recognition of their valuable contribution in creating awareness among voters.

New voters will also be felicitated and handed over their Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC).

The ECI publication “Electing the First President – An Illustrated Chronicle of India’s Presidential Elections” will be published soon. This book is the first publication of its kind and provides a glimpse into the history of presidential elections in this country.

ECI’s song “Main Bharat Hoon- Hum Bharat Ke Matdata Hain”, produced by ECI in association with Subhash Ghai Foundation, will also be screened. The song showcases the power of voting and celebrates the spirit of inclusive, approachable, ethical, participatory and festive elections in the world’s largest and most vibrant democracy.

Where can people vote?

Generally, the Board of Elections allows a person to vote where he or she resides or lives. It shall be considered an offense to vote at two or more different places and the Electoral Commission shall be informed of this whenever he or she changes his or her place of residence. In other words, we can say it is a crime. When a person reaches the age of 18, as an Indian citizen, he or she can register as a voter. In addition, the Electoral Commission modifies the electoral roll every five years and before elections. When voting, you do not need to carry your voter ID card, you can carry your PAN card, driving license, Adhaar card, etc.
