How are Olympic host cities chosen?

The IOC uses a rigorous evaluation process when selecting future host cities, narrowing down the final candidates through several stages. Initially, all interested metropolitan areas can submit proposals for review. The IOC Executive Board then conducts a preliminary review based on the recommendations of the working groups, shortlisting the most promising sites. In addition, an evaluation committee will thoroughly review the surviving applicants, ultimately making a single recommendation to the delegates for a vote. Although traditionally costly and complex, under Olympic Agenda 2020 the selection methodology has been simplified; facilitating sustainable and financially prudent planning through reduced formalities and longer advance notice periods. The new methodology was first fully applied to the selection of the 2032 Summer Games, and its elements also guided earlier decisions.

Who has hosted the most Olympic Games?

In the decades since the modern Olympics were revived, the distribution of hosts around the world has been somewhat uneven. To date, the majority of both the Summer and Winter Olympics have been held in Western Europe or North America, with those regions hosting more than 40 events. In contrast, Asia has hosted the Olympics eight times, but all in East Asia. Meanwhile, Eastern Europe has hosted three Olympics, and Latin America has hosted two. Here’s the full list:

To date, the African continent has never hosted an Olympic Games. Many regions of the world have also never had the honor of hosting the Olympic Games on their shores, such as the Middle East, Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and the South Pacific. Prior to 1992, the Summer and Winter Olympics had been held in the same country three times in the same year, the first time being when the winter events began nearly a century ago.
