Return to Monkey Island Gameplay

“Return to Monkey Island” is a point-and-click adventure game created by Terrible Toybox and published by Devolver Digital. Released in September 2022 for various platforms including macOS, Nintendo Switch, Windows, Linux, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, it is the sixth installment in the Monkey Island series.

Notably, it marks the return of the series’ original creator, Ron Gilbert, who had previously worked on the first two Monkey Island games. Following Gilbert’s departure from the development company LucasArts in 1992, subsequent Monkey Island games were developed by LucasArts and Telltale Games without his involvement.

However, after The Walt Disney Company acquired the rights to Monkey Island in 2012, Gilbert negotiated to create a new installment with designer Dave Grossman, who had also worked on the original games. The announcement of “Return to Monkey Island” came in April 2022, with the protagonist Guybrush Threepwood once again voiced by Dominic Armato. The game has generally received positive reviews from players and critics alike.

Return to Monkey Island Walkthrough

Part -1 (A Friendly Place)

In “Return to Monkey Island,” Guybrush Threepwood returns to the Island of Melee in search of the Secret of Monkey Island. In Part 1, called “The Friendly Place,” Guybrush starts at the Lookout Tower and talks to the Old Pirate Lookout about his voyage. He learns that his nemesis, LeChuck, is also on the island. Guybrush is directed to the Scumm Bar to speak to the Pirate Leaders for funding.

At the Scumm Bar, Guybrush interacts with the Trivia Book and speaks to the new Pirate Leaders, who are initially uninterested in helping him. After a conversation, they suggest that Guybrush goes with LeChuck instead. Guybrush leaves the bar, and his ToDo List is updated.

To find a ship, Guybrush goes back to the docks and interacts with the Job Openings board. He is told to bring his own mop for the Swabbie job, but he discovers that he is blacklisted by LeChuck. Guybrush then follows the Voodoo Lady to the Real Voodoo shop and receives a hint book. He visits Wally’s Maps-n-More to ask about a mop and takes a Monocle from the shop.

To make a mop, Guybrush goes to the Scumm Bar’s kitchen and talks to the Cook, who advises him to find the mop-handle tree. Guybrush returns to Wally and gets another Monocle before going back to the kitchen. The Cook reveals that the mop-head can be anything. Guybrush then asks Wally to create a map to find the Mop-Handle Tree. He follows the map and obtains the handle.

Guybrush also visits the Governor’s Mansion and learns about a dish served at a function. He tries to borrow Carla’s book but needs to apologize first. Guybrush buys a Forgiveness Frog from the International House of Mojo and combines it with a pen to write an apology. He retrieves information from a poster and a statue to complete the apology and gives the Forgiveness Frog to Carla. In return, he borrows the “Ingredients” book.

Returning to the Scumm Bar, Guybrush gives the Cook the book, who starts meal preparation. During the distraction, Guybrush cuts a slither of the mop. He takes it to Wally, who creates a map to find the Mop-Handle Tree. Guybrush follows the path and obtains the handle. He then explores the Museum of Pirate Lore, where he learns about Eyepatch’s voodoo powers.

Guybrush combines two Monocles to read the serial number on the display case. He goes to the Locksmith, obtains a key for the case, and exchanges the cracker mix for ready-made crackers. Finally, Guybrush gives the crackers to the parrot in the museum, uses the key to unlock the display case, and takes the Eyepatch.

Part -2 (A Dangerous Journey)

Part two of the “Return to Monkey Island” walkthrough takes place on LeShip, where Guybrush Threepwood tries to escape the hold. To get out of the hold, you need to pick up a pamphlet near the Ghost Chicken and inspect the crate to find a skull. Talk to the skull and then go to the porthole. Use the mop to swab the grease on the screws and remove them with the knife. Swab the grease around the porthole three times and climb outside.

On the deck, you’ll encounter LeChuck and his crew discussing the missing ingredient for their potion. Return to the hold, pick up the unboxed skull, and exit through the porthole again. Repair the laundry machine using the screws, flatten the skull by putting it through the machine, and drop it into the cauldron. Unfortunately, the potion gets ruined, and you’re tasked with finding new ingredients.

Climb up to the Crow’s Nest and use the telescope to discover another ship making a potion. Talk to Iron Rose, the quartermaster, and convince the crew to change their votes to go to Monkey Island. Each crew member has specific requirements to change their vote.

To convince Putra, the chef, to change her vote, find her promotion papers in the galley and offer to help her get promoted. Repair the greased-up porthole in the hold and feed the chickens, collecting their waste. Add these items to the First Swab’s Report and have Iron Rose sign it. Take the report to LeChuck’s cabin to get it signed and give the paperwork to Putra, making her a chef.

To convince Flair, retrieve her grandmother’s Whale Knife from Gullet’s back. Go to the rudders in the hold and remove the knife, then return it to Flair.

Flambe’s vote can be changed by obtaining his favorite food, a Scorched Alaska. Ask him about his favorite food and have Putra make it. Trim a glowing stick using a knife and combine it with Scorched Alaska. Give it to Flambe and borrow his book.

Iron Rose will change her vote if you show her the pamphlet from the hold. Use it in your inventory to convince her.

Apple Bob wants entertainment, so give him the book you borrowed from Flambe. Finally, return to the galley and speak to Putra again to ensure her vote aligns with Iron Rose’s.

After convincing all the crew members, ring the bell once to initiate the vote. Then ring it again to distract LeChuck and sneak into his cabin. Swap the map on his desk with the one you used in Part 1. Load the flattened skull into the cannon and fire it at the other ship. Watch the cutscene, choose some dialogue options, and conclude Part 2.

Part-3 (Return to Monkey Island)

In Part Three of the Return to Monkey Island walkthrough, Guybrush Threepwood returns to Monkey Island and explores various locations. He starts by picking up a Skull at the base of a tree and then follows a path into the jungle.

He explores different areas on the island, including a beach where he finds another Skull, a cliff with a scenic view where he picks up another Skull, a shipwreck where he collects a Skull and explores the wreckage, and the Giant Monkey Head where he finds yet another Skull.

Afterward, he follows the instructions on LeChuck’s Map to the Secret and successfully locates the Secret by following a specific path. However, upon picking up the Shovel, he forms an alliance with a group of pirates who require him to find LeChuck’s secrets. To do so, Guybrush sneaks back onto LeChuck’s ship with the help of the pirates, disguised as Gullet.

He then discovers LeChuck’s favorite food, tentacles with daisy sauce, and retrieves a tentacle to give to the ship’s cook. He also finds out LeChuck’s catchphrase by reading his diary and obtains LeChuck’s theme song by distracting Flair and taking the music sheet. Returning to the Giant Monkey Head, Guybrush plays the theme song on a set of skulls and recites the catchphrase to reveal the location of the Secret of Monkey Island.

Later, he encounters trouble but is saved by Elaine. They decide to rebuild the wrecked ship using a book on ship repairs and gather skulls from the Giant Monkey Head to decorate the ship. The chapter ends, and the story continues in Part 4.

Part- 4 (Things Get Complicated)

In Part 4 of the Return to Monkey Island walkthrough, Guybrush Threepwood is back on Melee Island and faces several objectives. First, he needs to go to the Voodoo Shop and speak to the Voodoo Lady. Outside the shop, he meets Widey Bones, who informs him about the Five Golden Keys needed to find the Secret of Monkey Island. Guybrush’s objectives are updated to acquire the golden keys from various individuals.

Guybrush also needs to obtain a map of the sea, which he can do by asking Wally at Maps-n-More to create one for him. With the map in hand, Guybrush can explore more islands.

On Melee Island, Guybrush interacts with Widey and tries to borrow her Golden Key but is unsuccessful. He then goes to The Cod’s Wallop, a fish shop, and learns about the Chums, a semi-secret society of anglers. To join the Chums, he needs to become a High-Ranking Chum, which involves winning a belching contest against some pirates.

Next, Guybrush visits the Locksmith and learns about Old Mrs. Smith’s Golden Key. He also discovers that the key was destroyed but receives a Probate Order. Guybrush then goes to Jail and learns that Stan has been taken to Brrr Muda Island. He sets sail for Scurvy Island and searches for Elaine, finding a torn picture and a note that guides him to her location. He also learns storytelling techniques from Elaine.

Guybrush proceeds to Brrr Muda Island and encounters a Scurvy Inspection Point, where he needs to present limes and fill out a Customs Form. He obtains limes from Elaine on Scurvy Island and successfully fills out the form. On Brrr Muda Island, he visits the Courthouse, presents the Probate Order, and receives Mrs. Smith’s Golden Key.

Guybrush then heads to the Ice Quarry, where he learns angling terminology from a guard. He tries to enter the Ice Quarry to see Stan but is asked for proof of knowing him. Unable to provide proof, Guybrush explores the Ice Castle and encounters the Ice Queen. To obtain the Golden Key of Brrr Muda, he must complete three challenges: Contest of Heartiness, Contest of Intelligence, and Contest of Seriousness. Guybrush wins the Contest of Intelligence by swapping test papers.

Leaving Brrr Muda, Guybrush returns to Melee Island and boards LeChuck’s ship. He interacts with Apple Bob, who teaches him to add more description to stories but requires a replacement joke book. Guybrush becomes a High-Ranking Chum by telling a story to the Fish Shop owner and obtains Bella Fisher’s flag. He also retrieves the book he gave to the Cook earlier.

Finally, Guybrush visits Stan’s Shipyard and collects a picture and a toothbrush from the collapsed building.

Part-5 (Beneath The Monkey Head)

“Beneath the Monkey Head” is part five of the Return to Monkey Island walkthrough. In this chapter, Guybrush Threepwood returns to Monkey Island and explores the Giant Monkey Head. The objective is to progress the story by completing various puzzles and objectives.

Guybrush and Elaine start at the Giant Monkey Head and proceed inside. They follow a zig-zag path until LeChuck’s crewmate tells them to stop. Guybrush ignores the warning and continues until he reaches a ledge. He enters a room with multiple paths and must choose between going left or right. In each room, there is a Monkey statue that requires an item to be placed in its hand.

In the first room, Guybrush places an empty Grog Mug in the hand of a Jolly Monkey standing on a barrel. In the next room, he places a Monocle in the hand of a Squinting Monkey and finds a Pebble. The third room features a Frustrated Monkey, and Guybrush places a Knife in its hands. In the fourth room, he gives Crackers to a Monkey statue with a parrot. After completing all the rooms, the door opens, and Guybrush retrieves his items.

Next, Guybrush goes down the stairs to the second floor. In this area, there are three rooms with Monkey statues and Treasure Chests. Guybrush collects Pebbles from each room, resulting in a total of five Pebbles. He must distribute the Pebbles among the Treasure Chests based on their size, ensuring no Monkey has the same amount. After solving the puzzle, Guybrush retrieves his coins from Captain Monkeybeard and proceeds to the third floor.

On the third floor, Guybrush encounters Monkey statues with different characteristics. He uses his Knife on a Sad Monkey and a Screaming Monkey. However, the third statue is broken, so Guybrush fills his Grog Mug with liquid and pours it on the broken statue to fix it. This action opens a door that leads to a lower level beneath the Giant Monkey Head.

In the next room, there is a wheel that starts closing. Guybrush must solve a puzzle to open the door. Clues from inscriptions and numbers above doorways help him determine the starting positions of the wheel’s three rings. Following the instructions, he rotates the rings accordingly and enters the door as the wheel raises. This leads to the revelation of the Secret of Monkey Island.

Overall, the walkthrough provides a step-by-step guide for players to progress through Part 5 – Beneath the Monkey Head, including completing puzzles and objectives necessary for advancing the story.
